How much would a tune up game have helped us?

After now losing to two teams in the opener that played the week before has been making me think that if we would have played a tune up game then we would have won the last two season openers. Players and coaching staff could have worked out the kinks and we would have looked a lot better against UCLA and FSU.

Would have helped immensely.

ETA: The dropped punts, the special teams issues, some of the O-Line problems, etc. All of that can get potentially exposed and cleaned up.

What can't get exposed is how dominant Jared Verse was, and how unprepared we were for his impact.

Don't think it helps last year, but this year we win if we get that terrible first half out of our system against some garbage team.

A tune up game is huge. I was considering FSU vs Duq a huge advantage. It certainly showed.

I think this is THE reason we lost. I can't believe our administration isn't taking any heat for letting this happen. Should have been in the contract that this had to be game 1 for both teams OR we should have moved Southern or New Mexico St to week zero.

I'm surprised this isn't getting more attention. Oh well....

That was not possible.

When these contracts were signed, this had never happened to LSU before, to my knowledge. Why would you write something into a contract you had no reason to think you had to worry about. The deal was closed in February of 2020 for the FSU games. Ucla was closed in 2018 I believe.

We have a contract with Clemson in 2025 & 2026 for openers. 2025 schedule (and 2024 for the return match with FSU) are set with little possibility of either team being able to get a week 0 game on their schedule. 2026 is not so, Clemson has a minimal schedule set up and Hawaii has open slots on its schedule including week 0. That is the only concern going forward and I don't really know how much of a concern it is.
