i keep hearing media personalities say we need a playoff because all the BCS flaws are being exposed this year. Isn't this the 1 year we dont need a playoff because there is 1 team that has performed better than anyone else?

only LSU and Houston undefeated, LSU has played the best schedule in the country... why would we need a playoff this year instead more than all the years with 4+ 1 loss teams and noone undefeated?

I've come to the realization that no matter what we want, we wont get it.

If they had a playoff the championship game would be LSU vs Alabama...Get over it!

We have to beat Bama again with their excellent coach and his process.

If anything I think this year most disproves that a playoff is necessary

LSU was in a playoff all season..just look at the ranked teams we played..nobody has ever had the body of work we have displayed this year..and that includes BAMA...LSU 2011 BEST TEAM OF ALL-TIME..

I've said it way before the BCS was created.

Of course you're right; the idea that LSU would need to play 4 games to be crowned champion in this of all years is absurd. Frankly if we beat UGA they may as well crown them right there.

And this is the tricky part. Some years, a 2 team playoff (i.e. the BCS as is) is the best way to determine a national champion. Sometimes you'd need a 4 team playoff (the plus-1 system). And sometimes, rarely, no playoff at all. But people would never accept the idea that the postseason could change from year to year depending on the teams. And some people can't wrap their minds around the idea of crowning a champion without some kind of playoff.* It's as simple as that. So their solution to every problem is "well we need a playoff."

*Of course we already have one, albeit a limited two team playoff. But the BCS doesn't count as a playoff, even though that's what it is, as apparently to be considered a "playoff" in the minds of the talking heads there need to be at least 4, and preferably 8, teams involved.

This is a pretty good way of putting it. A playoff is actually a lousy way to determine a champion in a sport like this.

The BCS is the best you're ever going to get - and it's pretty good.

I would go so far as to say it's impossible to decide a champion with any confidence in a sport with 120 teams but only 12 or 13 games to play. You just can't compare that many teams in that short a season.

I want a playoff because it would give us the opportunity to beat Bama twice every year. Also, 11/5 and 12/3 would actually have some meaning with a playoff.

None of the other divisions and subdivisions, leagues ...professional or amateur have a problem with it.

The problem with the BCS is that scheduling is too damn subjective. Putting the two teams with the best record together (and perceived resume) really can exclude the best team in the country.

I think any playoff system will go a plus one, where you put 4-1 and 2-3 together in a bowl game and the two winners play for the championship. In fact, you don't even have to expand the season with this scenario, just change a couple of bowl arrangements.

This is something I will NEVER agree to. My problem with the BCS has stemmed mostly from what happened with Auburn in 2004 when Oklahoma, USC, and Auburn were all undefeated.

I felt Auburn was at least just as good if not better than Oklahoma that year. We let a lifeless computer that doesnt watch games and bias sportswriters and media personalities who never played a down of football in their lives dictate who are the two best teams.

Now again the human polls are a double edge sword. They watch the games and can see for themselves when a team struggles when it shouldnt or if a team is better than what its rankings say. However, go back to 2004. Auburn, Oklahoma and USC. USC was number 1 with OK and AU second and third. If we were to rank those teams again this year knowing what we know now about the SEC, Oklahoma and Bob Stoops would Auburn still be third? I dont think so.

The human polls will likely give the SEC team the benefit of the doubt over ANY other conference team. Oklahoma's reputation has taken a hit the last 7 years. From Big game Bob Stoops to Chokelahoma. The SEC's reputation is second to none. This affects human voters and creates a built in bias.

In order to eliminate ANY bias or confusion or prejudice against a team in a weak conference you have a playoff. This way the case is made on the field and not in minds of a lifeless computer or talking media head.

Right, but that is never "fair" either because some teams face harder teams in a playoff or teams that match up better against them than other teams.

I don't care if they have a problem with it or not. All I said is that it was lousy. Plus, you can't conflate pro with college, as pro is a much more "closed system" - smaller and with more symmetry.

And you don't think having a playoff with a "final game" can exclude the best team in the country? As an example, you really think the Cardinals were one of the 2 best teams in the NFL a few years back when they played in the Superbowl?

You seem to forget the Auburn/LSU game from 2004.

Anything that fricked Auburn's 2004 football team over was all right with me.

You mean like how it is right now? Like in say week 3 while Alabama is on the road in Happy Valley playing Penn St while Boise St that same week is playing NU(Nobody Universty) in front of what, 27000 fans?

Or if Stanford is playing a struggling UCLA at home and while LSU is traveling to Morgantown to play West Virginia in front of a sellout crowd?

What you are saying is happening right now anyway.

At least in a playoff all teams involved arent exactly pushovers. If we had the 16 team format with all the conference champions and 4 or 5 wild cards you will have at least the top 10-15 teams in the country playing.
