Tulane moved the ball all night with Mike McKay and Reggie Reginelli. Find that in your history books.

KA BOOM!!!!!!! I remember it well.

So we credit the 82 team for LOSING to Nebraska, but say the 87 team wasn't as good, based on speculation? That makes sense. Oh BTW, in 1986 LSU Did beat Notre Dame. not hung with, not gave them a dog fight, we beat them. The 87 Notre Dame team lost to Texas A&M in the Cotton bowl. We beat A&M that year. I don't know if we would have beaten Miami or OU, but we would not have gotten embarrased by them.

H-TOWN.... You take this shite too serious.

Question bout the 1984 season. How did we go to the sugar? Did the sec take away florida's sec title before the season ended?

Regarding the exact timing of when UF went on probation, I get conflicting answers from Wikipedia. For what it's worth, the most detailed answer I was able to dig up comes from a comment on a blog post from Saurian Sagacity:

quote:

The problem with your 1984 argument, of course, is that the 1984 Gators were placed on probation after week one by the NCAA and then after they had finished conference play and won the school's first SEC Championship on a cold day in Lexington, were banned the following Tuesday from playing in the Sugar Bowl (thanks Doug Dickey, you vindictive coot) as SEC Champion and from all bowl appearances. So any claim that UF would have advanced under a BCS formula ignores those unfortunate circumstances (the conference was counting on Georgia and Auburn to do its work for it).

What's not in dispute is that Charley Pell admitted fault in breaking rules, asked to be allowed to finish coaching the season, and was fired anyway after the 3rd week of the season.

It seems stupid to me. Everybody already knew that Florida would not keep their SEC title that year, but nobody ever got around to stripping it from them until after they had won.

Incidentally, the '84 Gators were legit national champs that year but for the sanctions, and yet LSU tied them in the outrageously hot season opener on the artificial turf in Gainesville, and would have been co-SEC champs even without UF's sanctions, except for the stupid fricking loss to John Bond at Starkville ... again.

True but look at Miami and FSU back then and how many of them made NFL rosters and starred in the NFL. We didn't come close. Their defensive linemen alone were killers compared to ours. Goes back to a DL of Jerome Brown, Russell Maryland, and Danny Stubbs. Who the hell do you double team? Oh, and you have Barrow and Shannon running around at LB and Blades at DB.

People don't realize that we wanted to hire spurrier and arnsparger said don't hire him. He ended up hiring spurrier and screwed LSU.

Might be the dumbest myth in LSU sports.

What was weird was during the '85 Sugar Bowl vs Nebraska on the Superdome scoreboard they flahsed up "CONGRATULATIONS FLORIDA GATORS 1984 SEC CHAMPIONS". Florida was led to believe if they did x,y and z they would be declared SEC champs. But in the spring meetings Tennessee and Vanderbilt led a charge to get them stripped of their title. Their president Marshall Crisler dared anyone to take HIS SEC title ring off his ring finger.

Of course as for us not getting credit, had we beaten a bad Miss State team , we would have tied Florida at 5-0-1 so we really don't have anyone to blame but ourselves.

well to make 1984 worse, John Bond had graduated. Not sure who that guy was but they won 16-14. We tried a field goal with a few seconds left from close to 60 yds that wasn't close.

The week before we won at Alabama, 16-14.

Indeed you are correct. In 1984 LSU experienced its FIFTH straight loss to Mississippi State.

Not very close. imo

Bill never had a season in which his team didn't have at least 3 games LSU didn't win and at that time no team won a NC with more than one such game.

He was a good coach and he gave us 3 very good years.

Only my opinion, but I always felt LSU played his last year with the already decided next Fla AD on our sidelines.
