the horse-collar tackle rule is really good it does protect the players but maybe its not worth 15 yards and an automatic first down. I can see 5 yards even 10 but not the automatic first down. Its not like helmet to helmet contact or late hits where its blatantly illegal its simply a guy just trying to make a tackle when he's able to reach the opponent.

it is a good rule, but it is pussifying the sport. Much like the late hit out of bounds before the player even gets out of bounds. Ex: Highsmith's hit on tebow last season.

Here is the rule from the NCAA rule book 9-1-2-p.

It looks to me like having the jersey inside the neck is enough to call a horse collar. You don't have to have the shouylder pad. However, one poster says our player had the jersey but his grip was to the back of the jersey itself and not inside the collar. Also, it looks like it does not apply to a quaterback who is inside the pocket.

All players are prohibited from grabbing the inside back collar of the
shoulder pads or jersey, or the inside collar of the side of the shoulder
pads or jersey, and immediately pulling the runner down. This does not
apply to a runner who is inside the tackle box or to a quarterback who is
in the pocket.

simply grabbing the back of the jersey or shoulder pads (which is what happened with DB) is not a horse collar.. a horse collar tackle is when you grab the back of their shoulder pads and pull them down from behind while going full speed, inwhich anywhere from blown out knees to ankle rolls to strained backs can happen.. its a cheap move for lazy defenders to get an edge and theres no place for it in football.. the year before it got banned in the NFL Roy Williams had put 3 different players out for most of their season, TO being one of them (the reason why he played hurt in the super bowl).. it does need to be toned down a little bit though, as far as what classifies as a penalty

Maybe you're right. We can definitely agree that making it 15 + a 1st is too much. Perhaps 5 yards - unless its flagrant and intentional - then 15 + 1st.

Another rule I don't like is this idiotic tackle box rule. IMO, if you can't get a pass out to an actual receiver you should have to take a sack or scramble - or take an intentional grounding penalty - no matter where you are standing on the field.

This was the only way Darren McFadden could be stopped.
Last years South Carolina game.....Looked like he should have broken his leg.

I hate the tackle.....15 yards everytime
