The picture says it all. Wally was a class act that took time before each home game to get a good luck hug, tootsie roll pop and kiss from my little girl. He called her his little girlfriend and bragged to the other guys on the team.

I appreciate how difficult it is to accept that someone could be loved and respected in today's world. Most people today, including most rantards on this site, would just as soon step on a child rather than spend a few precious moments letting a child know that she is special. Reardless of his status as a baseball player, or as a result of his untimely death, Wally Pontiff was truly a gentleman who cared about the people around him.

Wally was far more than an LSU baseball player. Our university as well as our world is in desperate need for more like him.

GOD BLESS YOU WALLY!

I accept that. It doesn't change the fact that it is still very uncommon and unusual for a 20-year-old to die of a heart condition ... it's as simple as that. I'm still not sure why you're being such a dick in this thread.

Nice. That's the answer I was looking for.

Just curious, am I the only one who really didn't know much about Wally?

anytime you die like that in that situation you will be loved. alot of people really didnt look up to him as special untill he died. that summer he had been drafted and just announced he would come back to school before he died. he also got the only hit in the game against rice in the super regional. he was a hell of a player. sec tourny his freshman year was awesome.

He just had a way with people. The damn casino dealer that was dealing him and his dad cards the week before he died went to the funeral because of how much he respected that kid by how he was acting at the table. No drinking and lots of yes sir no sirs.

Wally Sr. seemed to have been very well liked as well.
Down here and Metairie there are still lots of people driving around with "Always 31" (or whatever it is) stickers on their cars.
When you got it you got it.

You're right. It is uncommon and unusual, and rare. But it happens. Without getting too personal, I had a family member die of the same thing and at a young age. Doctor said it's a rare disease and can only be detected if you know what you're looking for. And how many of us did extensive testing our teen years to look for a rare heart condition that we may or may not have?

I would hope that you're not incinuating he took roids though.

We'll only know the legacy at its level with what has become public after his death. With that in mind, I believe the Skipper's nod at publicizing his character speaks volumes of what kind of person he was.

While we are discussing Pontiff, I'd just like to say its a total joke that LSU retired this guy's number. He was a slightly above average player and gets his number retired SOLELY because he died young. That is ridiculous in my opinion and a complete insult to all of the former great LSU tigers. LSU legends like Walker, Furniss, Ogea etc. etc., don't have the honor of having their number retired but Pontiff does. You could list at least 50 players more deserving of having their number retired. I think its a slap in their face that LSU hasn't retired their numbers b/c they happened to not die while in college. Wally may or may not have been a great guy, but that along with dying young should not make your worthy of number retirement when he was not worthy based purely on baseball.

Lets just say if Brett Helms were to die this year, should LSU retire his number next to Billy Cannons? No b/c its fricking absurd. That recognition should be for the best of the best.

The problem with the traitor George W Bush being assassinated is that we would be left with Der Furher, Dick Chaney

Even that wouldn't help that jackass

And not a single one of them would have a problem with this, just a jerk-off like you.

It's about heart, not Todd Walker's average, or Hawpe's doubles record.

Go here sometime LINK, and may God have mercy on your awful soul.

Well shite, why the hell is the stadium even named after Alex Box then? Yeah, he served in the war and played for LSU, but there have to be at least 50 other players that were better than him.

sure hope this doensn't get back to his family. This has to rank as one of the highest a-hole comments I've ever read on the Rant, and that's saying a lot.
