Longtime scout Ernie Accorsi is quoted as saying that if Bert Jones had played under different circumstances, he probably would have been the greatest player ever.

2 months ago while going through my attic I found a big poster I had as a kid of Bert Jones in a Colts uniform.. I bought a big glass frame and I put the poster in it and it's hanging in my man cave.. my childhood sporting hero along with Carl yaztremsky

I love me some Bert Jones!

Imagine if he got to play for 4 years like these days, and didn't play in a two QB system!

Let's hope Max, Nuss, & Howard have the same competitive nature. Jeaux sure did!

Charlie Mac was a good man and won a lot of ballgames. But he had some Les Miles in him and the way he handled Bert Jones is one example.
Jones hurt his shoulder in 1978 and was never the same. That put limits on what could have been a Hall of Fame career. In today’s medical climate for arm injuries, they probably would have been able to fix his shoulder and probably would have kept him from trying to come back too soon.

didferent times, different era, he was pretty old school with some adaptability, players loved him and played their hearts out and above their heads for him, love the Casanova interview recalling a conversation he was having with Paul Brown and some of the big shots when he first got to Cincy, to paraphrase, Casanova: yeah, if this had happened and that wouldn't have happened we'd have been national champs last year! PB and everyone else: gut busting laughter, Casanova: did I say something funny? Brown: you guys for the most part were undersized, under-athletic, and slow but there's something going on down there with Mac that gets every ounce out of every one of you and it's always worth us taking a look down there

Met him in the Monroe airport some years ago Spoke with him about his time at LSU and the impending NFL player strike. Very approachable, down-to-earth. One of the best ever to play the game, but injuries cut his time short.

I have a red white and blue football signed by him to me personally. Great guy!

Great QB. Saw him play many times in front of Mike's trailer - 12 rows up.

Bert Jones was John Elway before John Elway was John Elway. He may not had the accolades coming out of H.S. but still was drafted #2 overall.
Again who knows what would have happened if his career had not been cut short. As it was, he had the Colts on the cusp and making the Super Bowl in 75-77 then the shoulder injury.

I’ve heard this story many times. One thing for certain, Coach Mac LOVED LSU. It was sad watching him that last year.

Actually Bert couldn’t play as a freshman
