I could definitely see Clemson utilizing the three high safety look, but both teams are very well aware of the vulnerabilities:
The PISTOL run game:
That link shows how the LB did a great job of stopping the RB at the LOS. The majority of those plays are via a four WR shotgun, running draws and zone run concepts.
Clemson’s biggest issue will be with Thad Moss, who has been an amazing run blocker. We’ve already ran plays out of the pistol, and the minute Clemson shows a 3 down linemen/3 high safety look, Burrow can pull CEH into the backfield and use Moss as a FB/additional blocker.
I can see Clemson incorporating this look to congest the middle of the field, aka our sweet spot all year, but CEH would feast with Moss’s blocking leading the way.

As a side note, and what others have alluded to about the whole “Clemson can’t substitute” vulnerability, you can bet the house that Venables knows this. One of Venables’s best coaching traits is the willingness to completely up-haul the defense and tailor it to their opponent.
With all of that being said, Burrow and Brady will still be able to exploit the mismatches.
Playcalling and schemes can only take you so far; you can shut down 3 or 4 of our playmakers, but we only need one to dominate this game.

I’d expect the first 2-3 drives to be situationally scripted running at warp speed Then as the confusion/ doubt builds, their tongues are hanging out and the subbing starts things will get more tactical in trapping personnel on the field and grinding clock on some drives giving our D a blow.
No way, no how they shut this offense down unless Joe finally has the dreaded bad game. I just don’t see it, not from that dude. Not in this game
