If I am correct our CBs generally play much more man than zone. I know since Pelini came that we were incorporating more zone but I still believe we normally play man to man for the most part. Is that Correct??

If that is correct isnt it easier for a Freshman (with great athletic ability ala PP) to come in and start because they are less schemes to learn. Am I thinking correctly?

Thanks

I'm no expert and this is just my opinion. But I don't really see "schemes" for playing zone being that difficult to learn. Now the playcalling on defense in general is going to be a lot different than what they've seen in highschool. Having said that, to me, the biggest thing is going to be the fact that he will be playing man to man against receivers that are way better than he faced in HS.

That's been true with Chevis and JZ at corner because the coaches weren't afraid to leave them on an island.

I would guess that the coaches will have a wait and see attitude toward the way they play in the secondary. If Jai and Hawkins look good in man coverage against the likes of App State, Troy, and North Texas, then they may not make any changes to the scheme. If it looks like those two are getting beat, then they may switch to more zone coverage or get Peterson in (who projects to be a lock-down corner). Hawkins looked great in mop-up time last year, but I'm a little less convinced with Jai. I wouldn't be surprised to see Hawkins and Peterson starting at corner with Jai and Phelon Jones at nickelback positions by about mid-season.

Saban /Muschamp ran mostly man b/c of the complex blitzing packages they had (man do I miss those).

For reasons unkown Pelini backed off after starting agressive and played more zone with a 4 man rush.

To answer you question it depends on the type of kid. I see PP as a physical CB who would excell in man to man coverage, however not all CB are good "cover" guys and do better in a system where they can use insticts and regognition as well as ability. (see Jason David)

look for a lot of calls on our secondary this year. It happened with hookfin, webster, daniels and chevis when they first started. A few pass interfenrence and holding calls should be expected with new cb's.
