This thread is stolen from the coaches changes board but I thought that many on here would enjoy the article. It gives insight into how he is as a coach. Obviously some of the scheme stuff might have changed in 11 years but its better than not knowing anything.

quote:

In his scheme, the safeties, are pretty much designed to make all of the plays. That’s how it was when he was coaching us. We’d roll down into the box in run support.

quote:

It was really a multiple defense, we called a 3-4, we ran a 4-3. We’d roll a linebacker up and make it look like a 5-2. We were also running a 46 Bear, but we also had a lot of consecutive 3-3-5.

quote:

Yeah, Coach Jones isn’t your typical coach. He’s the one that wants you to call him if something else is going on outside of football.

quote:

how competitive is Coach Jones?

I remember one time at practice, he said he didn’t want to give up no touchdowns. I don’t know what pissed him off, but we ended up giving up a touchdown or two at practice, and it was the second touchdown we gave up, and he said ‘Y’all meet me at the hill after practice.’ Maaaan! We just gave up two touchdowns at practice. But that was the standard he held us to. He wanted us to be the best. He came in my freshman year, and we weren’t the best. We gave up over a thousand yards rushing in our first three games, by the fifth game of the season at half time he talked to the defense and said if you guys don’t get together, I’m just going to throw the young guys in for the rest of the season, and he did. I think from that point on, we went from the CIAA worst defense to the best defense in the Nation in DII football.

I'm confident he will do the following based on what I've read about him and from quotes from players/coaches he's been around:

- Teach the players in a way they understand what he wants them to do (big issue last year)
- Have them sticking to their assignments well
- Get the players to buy-in to what he's selling culturally and scheme wise
- Improve the culture in the locker room
- Show sound fundamentals

That alone is a major upgrade and we will notice it immediately.

If he can do this:

- Outscheme opponents each week
- Make strong half-time adjustments
- Recruit at a high level

Then we will be loving this guy in Baton Rouge. Regardless, I think we'll be fundamentally sound and have our guys playing with heart. Just hopeful he can match wits with Kiffin types.

We'll see! Rooting hard for him.

There is plenty on Jones for the glass half full crowd to like. He is a young guy who sounds like he relates to the players well which could be a big boost for recruiting. And he comes highly recommended.

There is plenty on Jones for the glass half empty crowd to dislike. He is a fallback hire and his resume is underwhelming to be the defensive coordinator for a top SEC team.

I am a glass half full guy. He could be great, no one knows. Its a low bar after Pellini.

I'll just stay optimistic and root for the guy. Sure seems like a good guy to pull for to do well.

Q: What defensive front are we running?

A: All of them.

We actually have the personnel for this, too. We have big, but more athletic young DTs who aren’t just 3-4 space-eaters. We have some lighter, more athletic young LBs like White and Sampah who should work well in a scheme that moves them around and and demands different things. We have a hybrid guy in Webb who could be a perfect fit as an LB who can come up as a DT when needed. Jones will have the raw materials for a morphing, multiple front defense.
