First, you need a history lesson on the economics of LSU football and learn that LSU Football revenues have supported the state for a long time - not the other way around.
I have no idea why you would think this. College athletics have only become a serious revenue generator with modern television. Prior to that time, their revenue was limited. Whether you like it or not, LSU and practically all state institutions would not be as big and significant without state tax help. A number wouldn't even exist at all without this help.

Second, I have lived in Dallas for 25 years hearing TCU fans excuse their horrid fan attendance based on a smaller student population. The DFW metroplex has 6.6 million sports crazy people while BR has less than 500,000 and the entire state of LA only has 4.6 million. TCU doesn't consistently fill its relatively small stadium because TCU doesn't have a product worthy enough to attract fans to attend the games. Even after 2 Rose Bowls - TCU Football still can't tap into a meaningful share of the 6.6 million DFW sports market. The product is simply not very popular - even with the TCU student body.
If you live in DFW; then, you know the entertainment dollar has a lot of competition between pro teams like the Stars, Mavs, Cowboys, Rangers, Burn or whatever they are called now, etc. Then, you also have other entertainment options available. Finally, you have competing allegiances for different college football teams. So it is not the same as BR because BR does not have any of this competition. In addition, LSU has the benefit of being the largest state school in its state where people grow up encouraged to support the big state U. This happens in Texas too but that support is for UT and A&M, not the small private school. You can see the same thing in Louisiana as to why there isn't record support for Tulane.
That being said, TCU's fan attendance has grown each year for a number of years now. This should continue especially with the move to the Big12 which was something TCU only joined last year and is a more appealing option to casual fans who would rather see TCU play Tech rather than TCU v. CSU.
The fact is I am aware of only one small private school in the entire country that has a huge fan base and that is Notre Dame. They are unique because of their history, location, Catholic ties, etc.
Even Miami with all its success shows the challenges of building a large fan base for a private school in a major city.

they would have to fill a stadium of 163,000 fans. We both know LSU could not do that consistently.
as bad as that sounds, i actually think we could do that...93k in the stadium for every SEC game and about 90k outside the stadium, if tickets were cheap like $25, id make a little wager as to say yea we could fill that up...i prob go to 2-3 LSU games a year, and always go to Dallas for games and i know for the big ones Bama/fl/etc i bet we could consistently fill out that many for the right price...still wish the stadium expansion would go to 105K

I'm not sure why TCU isn't considered a marquee matchup.
First game of the year
Top 15 team
It's a three letter team like we are

I think that LSU Football has been a net contributor and not a net user of state funds for a very long time because it is true. That is why I think that.
And yes, I live in DFW and agree with you that in the competitive market for the sports dollar among the 6.6 million persons living in DFW, TCU routinely falls short. And all those teams you mentioned rarely have games that compete head to head with TCU games. Yet, Amon Carter has empty seats in what would be e smallest SEC stadium by far for almost every game.
TCU Football has no need to be ashamed of being a significantly inferior product with inferior support to LSU Football. But it is a fact.
