IMHO

1. Late defensive play calls that force the defense to show "their hand" pre-snap. If the coverages were called in a resonable amount of time the DBs could mask coverages and blitzs.

2. POORLY coached DBs!!! Even when Stafford/Tebow were pressured, the DBs are out of position or being burned in man coverage. Examples are the Harvin tipped TD when someone should have been "over the top;" The Green TD with Stafford being pressured and Jai Eugene unable to cover a post route one on one when he (should) know he has no safety help deep and inside.

No doubt. Don't laugh, but we really need to have a suffocating defensive performance against Tulane. These guys need a confidence builder in a big way.

One other thing...I really think that some underestimate the impact of the Gustav/Troy St postponement. This hurt our team at a crucial time and I truly believe that game was an important (and relatively low-pressure) tune-up before hitting the meat of our schedule.

Didn't Eugene trip on that play? I might be confusing it with another...

Good point. I think the win at Auburn diminished the impact of the Troy game being postponed in the minds of many. But I agree, with a young team these tune-up games are needed.

With Bama the following week anything else should be alarming.

I don't think he tripped, but even if he does, he needs to be more athletic and stay in good position. If he tripped it is most likely a move that caused it. If someone is going to burn you for 6, the best thing to do is get a pass interference!!! I think Jai is a good young corner, and he will improve with experience and GOOD COACHING from somewhere!!! I just don't like the late calls and the coverage schemes. Defense is usually an area where talent can cover for lack of experience, but only when the coaches put the players in position.
I really miss the zone blitz packages!!!

Not to mention we see what caliber of team Auburn turned out to be this year...

Confusion
Players out of position
Busted coverages
LBs getting regularly sealed from running lanes
No consistent pressure from the DL
Missed tackles

No leadership - no one getting in people's faces when they blow an assignment.

A very good summary. I remember one blitz where we got burned-three of our rushers tried to squeeze through one hole and were all held out by one blocker. Every long play UGA had, we either missed a tackle for a loss, or Stafford got rocked a nanosecond after he released the ball. WAY too much time for a good QB. This is a team we could/should have stopped. UF just flat beat our arse, UGA...meh.

Bump for the confusion subject.

IMO this is the biggest worry, this can be attributed to:

1). Inability to understand the schemes and the inability to dumb down the calls. This falls on the players and coaches shoulders.

2). Inability to effectivley communicate between each other once a call has been made. Again, players and coaches faults. We need to bring back the Number board and just have Darry read the number off of his play sheet.

3). Ineffective practices. Apparently there is a lack of prepearation or repitition in practice that leads to the confusion pre snap.

Sorry to rant, but this has been my biggest concern all year.

It's not coming from the present DC twins. Coach Miles better put on his LSU glasses and see that our history and tradition is built on the foundation of solid, SEC calibre defense. Anything less will not be, never be, acceptable. I applaud his offensive-mindednes which he brough here from Michigan and Oklahoma State. But we are LSU and we must have defensive excellence. It currently ain't happening, and given all the talent, it's on the coaches.

This is what our defense is struggling with:

the LACK of any kind of on-field leadership. Have you seen anyone step up and be a Landry, Dorsey, Spears or James? No emotional leader, no emotion, no fire-in-the-belly.

Stuggling with their pride. When they have to get off the ground after a TRUE freshman OL has pasted them.
