this....bigtime. it still blows my mind when I think of Marshall Faulk playing for SDSU. huge opportunities missed.

I'm not the least bit embarrassed.....we've just "restored order" and we didn't have to resort to 'shoe boxes full of grants' to do it. frick the tide....we will make the fratboys cry and the rednecks will be pulling a billy joe mcalister.

I remember getting a few guys here and there under Saban (Adrian Mayes, Xavier Carter, Dwayne Bowe, Barrington Edwards), but not the number and overall quality we are now.
Saban got a few more, most notably Jamarcus, but also some highly touted guys like Amp Hill, Mario Stevenson, Lavell Hawkins (if only for a few weeks), and the Great Peter Dyakowski. not to diminish what Les has done out of state, but the level to which Saban brought the program laid the foundation for pulling the nat'l recruits we're getting. much as Gerry's success made it easier for Saban to set up the fence around LA.
bottom line: we stacked, SEC is fricked.

Oh, i have. That is a large point of this post, as I was one of those who preferred Saban until really got to know Les, and now I prefer Les (NEVER, thought I would say that quite honestly, but I do mean it).
My comment was not to be thought of as a ding against Saban for having Bama, or against Saban. I really like Saban as a football coach (not so much as a person though, I think he is genuinely a richard). I just really do think that no matter what Saban says in public, and especially what his wife says in public because they have to as long as they are there), that the middle-north culture of Alabama is very much NOT to their liking, and he will always genuinely regret missing out on his possible long term run on the bayou. That being said, I do indeed think he is in a wonderful football place, so since he is much more football focused than anything else, he can bury himself in the Bama excellence and be just fine. It's all good by me - it really is !
Les is a strong head football coach who is a great man. Saban is just a strong head coach.

It is truly amazing. LSU is coming off one of the best seasons in terms of accomplishment in the history of college football, and most fans believe that the 2012 and 2013 teams will be superior. That is just sick. If Mett is anywhere what we/I think he is, which I still think he is Hodson caliber, LSU will roll on Offense like Okie State and on defense like LSU and on special teams like....well, LSU again...what a frightening thought to opponents. I bet they are just sick of our successes so far, and to think what we have coming in just makes them want to puke even more...

I think it's important to note that Les could have gone the DiNardo route (although probably not as drastic) with the MalVeto experiment. But he made the change and we've gone straight north from that 08 season (of course with the Crowton hiccup thrown in too
).

When you think about the great in state talent LSU has put out there, then you think about the great ones that got away. It's amazing the talent Louisiana produces!

ther coaches had also long-time stated that LSU was a "sleeping giant"
Barry Switzer has said this numerous times. That he always knew LSU would explode at some point, once they got the right guy(s) in there.

Yep. He said that, and he also said "give me Harris County, Texas, and you can have the rest of the country". Houston is also loaded, making it all the better due to manageable proximity.

Genuinely great thread going on here. I think you stop way too short in saying Miles "raised the level up at least a half of a notch", probably because you didn't want to put some posters off as just a Saban bashing, Miles loving ranter.
As an original member of the Miles fanclub, AND someone who loved the Saban years and fully realize how amazing he was for our program and never begrudged him for leaving to pursue his dream of the NFL, I can easily say the LSU program today is LIGHT YEARS ahead of where we were on Christmas Eve of 2004.
Seriously, it isn't even close, and no one should have any debate about that FACT. Saban built a stronghold on DiNardo's foundation, which Miles has transformed into a goddamn fortified city on a hill.
A couple of my favorite posts so far:

Ignoring the duo of Kelvin Sheppard and Perry Riley out of Stone Mountain (and we got a lot of mileage out of that 2-for-1 special), we've nabbed, outside of our natural recruiting area an arguable #1 player in Michigan (Barksdale), South Carolina (Montgomery), Ohio (Ware) and now Indiana (Kiel), as well as a clear NFL prospect from South Florida (Peterson).
Throw in guys like Rickey Jean-Francois, Alex Hurst, Williford, Kevin Minter, Gore, Boone, Copeland, all three QBs from last year's class - all from outside our traditional recruiting area of Louisiana, Houston and Tyler, Texas, and Mississippi. I remember getting a few guys here and there under Saban (Adrian Mayes, Xavier Carter, Dwayne Bowe, Barrington Edwards), but not the number and overall quality we are now.
Gotta add Shepard to this list too, because even though his on field impact hasn't been off the charts, the impact of the signing itself was monumental, and helped build up that historic class for the Tigers.

I give Gerry credit for making the first step at closing the border and refocuing recruits attention back on LSU. Especially when you think back to the flash of some of the programs (Florida State, Notre Dame, Miami) that were raiding Louisiana in the 80s and early 90s. Hell, even Colorado was picking up talent back then.
DiNardo started it, Saban capitalized on it and Miles has continued to step it up.
The non-LSU fan will tell you that our football program didn't exist until Nick Saban came along and birthed it from his golden vagina. But I'm over 40 and know this to be bullshite.
Quote of the year!!!

LSU would have had to look outside Louisiana to find enough linemen and linebackers to challenge for championships even with the studs you named. Despite the abundance of talent in Louisiana, it is not always distributed among the positions to form a football team with depth. Saban and Miles have been good at filling out the roster, at positions where Louisiana has been weak from either a qualitative or quantitative perspective, with out of state talent.

in addition to accumulating talent, i don't think you can underestimate the effect of building a program in full -- quality facilities, better academic support, a higher quality student athlete experience. part of this is the vision to push for all this stuff, another part is funding, and the final cog is (this being Louisiana) getting the politics all turned in the right direction. to be successful, we didn't just need the right coaches, but the right administration as well.

Adrian Mayes' sleeves were scared of him. He was always walking showing off some serious guns.

I hit submit too quick! I also wanted to comment about how well Saban fits in in the South. He is like Mr. Drysdale living with the Beverly Hillbillies! It was even worse when he was amongst my coonass brethren down da Baya! That surley bastard sure can coach though!
PS: Give me Les and have fun while winning!

It's an abomination how little credit DiNardo gets on here, IMO generally from the younger fans who have no concept of what it was like before he came and started the uptick or from ignorant older fans.
It's hard to describe what the signing day bashes were like in Dinardo's first few years. The magic really was back and to think of where our program is now is just unreal. BUT... all it takes is one or two years of taking the foot off the gas and you're immediately sent to the back of the line. Look at the Gators. Or Dinardo's 4th and 5th years. Miles has done the type of job that legends are made of.
