Fwiw - a lot of people thought it was a bad hire. Especially after UAB loss

At the time of the hire I thought "Why in the hell are we paying this guy so much?" Losing to UAB and getting blasted by UF (again) sure didn't help. In hindsight it worked out pretty well though.

Classy, and very kind and gracious to "the help." Great Tiger.

I didn't know Joe well, but I did bump into him after he left LSU a few times. "Classy", "very kind", and "gracious" described the man pretty well in my limited dealings with him.

As to Nick, fine coach who didn't want to be at LSU for whatever the reason. I'm happy to have a very successful HC who has proven that he does want to be at LSU.

Joe almost ran me over as I was walking at a cross walk in one of his many documented drunken binges, so don't talk about greatness when he hadn't played a game in decades at that point. He was an expert at landing in the lakes.

Eh, saban was making the jump to the nfl no matter what. It was just a matter of when

I agree here, BUT,

Him leaving mich st to lsu was a lateral move.

This is so wrong... LSU[at the time] was a way better job than MSU was.... He would have NEVER done at MSU that he was able to do at LSU....

Mark Emmert, then Chancellor of LSU, now Prez of the NCAA, hired Saban away from Michigan State, where he was their HC for 5 seasons, his record there was 34-24-1 with his best season there 9-2 for Sparty.

Saban didn't become a national name until LSU, and the success here.

at the people in here, Saban was already on NFL radars while at Michigan State. Everyone knew he had the talent/drive to succeed, he saw LSU was a sleeping giant and would be his next big move.

Saban was already a great coach, but it was Emmert's blueprint for running a program that has made Saban the force he is today.

I'm thinking Miami probably wishes Saban had never been on their radar and they might offer a different take on both his talent and drive.

The one thing I know about both the Saban and Miles hiring; LSU officials involved in the process were looking for a coach that had success at what is considered a lower level major college competing against the higher level major college teams.

Saban did that at Michigan State and Miles did it at Oklahoma State.

While both of those schools are much more prevalent now (maybe because of Saban and Miles), they were not so at the time.

I dunno, I was a student at the time and I don't recall much grumbling about the Saban hire. I recall relief that Dinardo and Tepper were leaving and cautious optimism about Saban .

He inherited great talent that was here already. He did implement his defensive scheme which earned him a national title and the rest is history.

Certainly true - he had his first bowl win after his first season at LSU (28-14 over the favored Georgia Tech Yellowjackets in the Peach Bowl). He had his first conference championship in his second season at LSU (2001) which was also LSU's first in some time. "Dinardo's players" were apparently good enough to get past #2 Tennessee in a rematch in the SEC-CG, after losing to them in the regular seasons, getting blasted by Florida in Tiger Stadium 44-15, and losing to an unranked Ole Miss team in Tiger Stadium. We also beat an overrated Illinois team in the Sugar Bowl - fairly convincingly. So, when people say LSU made Saban - that is more true than saying "Saban made LSU". However, both sides benefitted greatly from the relationship.

Mark Emmert’s first choice was actually Butch Davis. Davis was at Miami “Canes”. He was going to take the job, however Davis was very clear that he had an interest in going to the NFL. Emmert told him he needed a five-year minimum commitment; it would take that long to turn the program around. Davis could/would not make that commitment. Emmert then turned to Gil Brandt, asking him whom he would hire. Gil stated; if he would come, I would get Nick Saban at Michigan State. He is the best evaluator of talent that I know.

Skip was still the BB coach at the time. Joe Dean was still the AD. As a side note..Emmert told Joe, that he (Joe) would join him on the trip, but he had no decision-making authority at all. They met with Nick at Sextons home in Memphis, TN where the deal was made and sealed. I can tell you there was no discussion of $ by Saban. He asked what the graduation rate was, is LSU prepared to invest in facilities. Nick did not visit the campus prior to agreeing to becoming LSU’s HC.

Saban had a mediocre record as head coach before coming to LSU.

Michigan St. had reduced scholarships from NCAA probation that started right before Saban was hired in E. Lansing. They ended after the '98 season. The next yr, his last @ MI St., the Spartans defeated Notre Dame, Michigan, OH St. & Penn St. in the same season for the only time in the program's history. Also, he never had a losing season @ MSU.

It started, for Saban, in 1995 when he came to Louisiana to play LSU in the Shreveport bowl game. A first year LSU Gerry DiNardo, taking over after six straight losing years, hammered a fifth year at Michigan State Saban in that bowl game.

Check your information, chief; in 1995, Saban was in his first season at Michigan State. Not to mention the fact that he was operating under scholarship limitations caused by the previous coaching staff. From 1991-1994, Saban was Bellichick's defensive coordinator with the Cleveland Browns.
