Let’s do some simple math. For simplicity’s sake let’s use a “combined” tax rate of 10% using your math.

100k of taxable income
18k of taxable purchases over a 12 month period

State A:
8% sales tax
2% state income tax

State B:
6% sales tax
4% state income tax

State A’s total tax burden is $3,440
State B’s total tax burden is $5,080

Only about a 33% difference

And that ignores the critical variables of things like sales tax bases between states and whether federal income tax is deductible for state, etc, etc
