You can also go to radio shack and get a signal meter for $39.95. Plug it into the box and into the satellite. Once you get the thing close your signal meter will get louder. Then your set. unplug the meter and hook everything back normal. I tried it for the first time 2 and had it up in going in 5 minnutes. I would not do it without a meter.

Make sure your tripod is level, too. If you are using the tic marks on the satellite but your tripod is not level then you will be off. Does your tripod have a bubble on it to help level the head?
I just set my DirecTV up for the first time this year a couple of weeks ago. It took me about ten minutes of slow rotation and vertical rotation to hone in.
If none of the aforementioned tips helps, you can do what I did. Turn the TV towards you with the power on and the volume up. Then go to the setup screen and highlight the strength meter. Rotate the dish to one side of where you think the satellite is. Rotate it horizonally a couple of degrees (not very much at all) and stop. Then rotate it on the vertical axis. Keep moving it a few degrees and stopping to rotate vertically each time.
Eventually, you'll see and hear the signal meter go up. Then you just hone in on it until you get the max level. At that point lock it down and watch some football.

Also try changing transponders on your satellite menu. The better ones vary weekly in our case.

EMT512 - there have been some great recommendations posted here. Make sure you try out the dish in your own backyard first. Get it working there and you won't have problems hooking it up to tailgate as long as you've got a clear view of the SW sky. Look for other tailgaters in your area and don't be afraid to ask for help. Where do you tailgate?

I tailgate in between the law school and University High.

Got it working yesterday and I probably looked like a little kid at Christmas. The best piece given here that helped (and all of the info was good) was about how to set the elevation by not using the screws. As soon as I lined it up on the mount, the receiver started beeping. Easy as hell from there.
Again, I appreciate all the help. Geaux Tigers!!!

you must make sure that it is pointed EXACTLY where you need it. we never used any compasses or anything. find the general direction it needs to be and slowly keep moving it. for directv, it has a audible signal that beeps faster when the signal is stronger. plus, make sure that you are all plug up where you need to be. good luck, you'll enjoy once its up and running.

You can get a signal meter on ebay for $9.99 that works great for me. Also whoever you bought your dish from should be able to help you. I bought mine from the internet and I had to call them a couple of times. Has to be perfect though. Got to practice a lot.
You may also need two cables to get every channel you're looking for. Good luck.
