It was discussed pretty early, but no one was sure how to interpret the by-laws. Sankey was made aware of it and he wasn't sure either, but he was starting to take flack for allowing the game to be cancelled and not being able to get it rescheduled, so he probably decided to interpret it as requiring 8 games in order to force LSU and UF to work it out. He didn't plan on Alleva then using it to leverage them both into a more equitable compromise than they were planning.

Think I will eat my cheese Whopper and take another nap.

I don't believe it was a rule until yesterday

It wasn't, and still isn't. At best, it's a questionable interpretation of other rules. But, it saved us from being totally screwed and resulted in our only being partially screwed, so I'm not going to complain about it.

No one knew the rule, Foley said he wasn't even aware of it.

No shite he didn't know about it. If he did, he would have acted very differently. But there's a good reason he wasn't aware of it.

That's because it wasn't (and isn't) explicitly in the rules. It's an extrapolation by Sankey to save his own arse. It comes from a rule about scheduling that says teams "shall play eight conference games". Divisional championship rules say the division titles are decided by "winning percentage", which is an odd way to say "better record" unless it is contemplated that teams may in some cases not play the same number of games.

Bottom line:

1) LSU desperately needed to play the game because canceling it would hurt us, so we offered any and every alternative to make sure the game was played. We offered to play at any location and at any time on Saturday, Sunday or Monday. We offered our plane to Florida if they wanted to play in Baton Rouge, and even agreed that, if the game were in Baton Rouge, we would not allow fans to attend the game to avoid a home crowd for LSU.

2) UF wanted to dodge the game because they thought it would help them not to play the only remaining game on their SEC schedule in which they were underdogs, so they refused to consider any contingency plan.

3) If the hurricane gave them any chance, they planned to cancel the game (or postpone it with no rescheduling choices except ones that were extremely disadvantageous to LSU, so we would not agree to them) and gain the advantage of not playing the game.

4) The hurricane forecasts cooperated, so rather than, as LSU asked, wait until the storm hit and see how bad it was before canceling the game, Florida pre-emptively canceled the game before the storm hit.

5) LSU complained about this, but the SEC said frick off and collaborated with Florida.

6) The storm had minimal effect on the Gainesville area, and national media constantly reminded viewers of how beautiful the weather was in Gainesville that day.

7) The media (and other SEC schools, including Tennessee) went fricking berserk and Sankey was taking heat.

8) Sankey pussed out under the heat and went back on his collaboration with Florida and told them they HAD to make a deal to reschedule the game, or they would not be eligible for the SECCG.

9) LSU sensed that the tables were turned and decided to treat Florida the same way they treated us when they thought they didn't need the game as much as we did.

10) Left with no choice by LSU, Florida agreed to play the game at LSU, but still got concessions (daytime kickoff, home game next year) that were way more than they deserved.

11) Sankey got pissed at LSU for driving a "hard" bargain after he had initially agreed to conspire with Florida to frick us over and was forced to change his mind.

12) Sankey and Florida, with egg on their faces when their attempt to frick us over was shot down, got pissed that LSU used the situation to negotiate a less unfavorable result for ourselves, so they decided to trash LSU in the media.

frick them. frick the SEC. frick Florida. frick the media for eating up every drop of jizz those frickers decide to feed them.
