By no means am I a defensive guru but that has been the only side of the ball to improve somewhat. So we switched to a 3-4 but I didn't see any added benefits. I still felt like Key lined up as a 4th D-lineman a good bit. Are we in a transition and just not completely sold on it?

never ever ever go to a 3-4 when you have a stud dt who.....in the 3-4......will get double teamed all fricking night long.

that's just my opinion.

it may be a good defense against some spread teams but, against whisky, bama, arky, etc........you will get destroyed.

First game with a new defense, thought we played really good. We played good enough to win with any kind of offense but then we are LSU. We have no offense!!!!

if our opponents average 330-380 total yards on offense against us it will be a disaster all year.

I miss the days when our old defense would allow 150-200

We ran out of the "base" for vast majority of the time, just like the spring game.

I think alot of that was due to two things: Wisconsin had a TON of guys moving around presnap to try and create confusion knowing this is our first game installing an entirely new defensive system, and the fact Arranda's only implemented part of the new system and will be adding more as the season progresses.

I only saw one sack yesterday. it took about 6 seconds for key to make it happen. not used to the "non-pressure" d-line. and......I suppose if we stay in the 3-4......we can only expect coverage sacks from now on.

the team was unimpressive, including the D. If Wisky had any kind of QB in the redzone LSU would have been cooked much earlier than the last minute. Entire D seemed to be pushed around for most of the game.

And the quoted statement has a Lou Tepper feel written all over it

People are getting caught looking at scoring stats and missing the fact that we got pushed back all day and coverage looked to be cotton candy soft most times. Not impressed.

the defense is the reason we didn't lose 41-14.

dave aranda and his D is the shiny part of this turd.

A couple of tackling problems, yes, but for the most part the D did its job. being on the field the whole game will make any defense a little softer, but these guys held up very well.

a guy like valentine, his job in the 3-4 is to eat up multiple linemen, allowing for those OLB and Safety blitzes, 1 on 1s with RB's, overloaded sides etc.

fill their zone block with 1 guy and there are 2 that can attack.

being on the field the whole time is the result of two things:

1- offense going 3 and out (or a turnover)
2- THE DEFENSE NOT MAKING THE OTHER OFFENSE GO 3 AND OUT (or a turnover)

1 on 1s with RB's,

ok..........go to a practice and tell your r.b. that he will go one on one with a linebacker.

I promise you that....out of 10 runs (one on one), the r.b. will juke that linebacker out of his jock on 8 attempts.

cm'on man, be real. The D is part of that equation. They made stops when Wisky's QB made a bone headed decision. And that was pretty much it. LSU did lead in the last 4 minutes until Wisky drove right down the field for a long FG.

Again it was a Total Team Collapse

i mean a pass-blocking RB

not one with the ball.

the linemen and the ILB's are for stopping the run, the OLB's (generally) are for edge rush/dropping coverage

So the defense forces 3 turnovers, scores a defensive touchdown, holds the other team to 16 points, and y'all are bitching about their performance? C'mon guys, wake up! If the defenses wouldn't have played the way they did Wisky would've scored 35+ and ran us out of the stadium. Our defense was constantly on the field (Wisky time of possession was 37 mins...)

Aranda and his defense played their asses off and put us in position to win and then some. All the blame goes to Miles and his lack of preparation and stubbornnes on offense.

yeah they were on the field the whole game because our Oline is awful, can't get push, and our playcalling won't change.

but the D performed admirably considering the circumstances.

especially our secondary. it's nasty.

again, tackling problems. but the rest of it looked pretty good.

i saw Godchaux walking,

i saw Valentine adjusting his GD mouthpiece with his hand on his hip as the ballcarrier ran right past him for 12yds or so... there were individual mistakes for sure, but over all, the defense wasn't the problem.

not saying any of that isn't true cause it is. D wasn't THE problem.

But again, they got pushed around A LOT and couldn't stop a fricking counter play to save their lives.

So yes, could have been worse but D didn't help at certain points.

I think more of my point is the entire team failed in reality.
