I would put the former walk ons who got awarded a scholly this year in a separate category as if numbers manipulation needed to happen, that would be where it would happen. I think I saw 5 former walk ons listed out on your list in TE Mashburn, RB Demas, RB Williams, WR Francioni and OL Payne

I’m not sure all of those guys have scholarships (yet) anyway. I just made a similar thread on the RB and the only one I could find with confirmation that he received a scholly was Williams.

That said, scholarships at P5 programs are now guaranteed regardless of athletic performance. They aren’t rolling one-year offers like the old days. Not sure if/how that rule applies to walk ons who have already been awarded a scholarship though.

And yes, there are numerous ways to get out of those guarantees. “Medical retirement” is probably the best known way, as it allows the player to continue to receive financial aid.

They all received a scholarship during the middle of this past season, besides Williams who was awarded in 2020. You can find news articles about it here LINK

Thanks.

It will be interesting to see what they do with Pig Cage as well. I just can’t believe we are in a situation where the numbers are getting tight. Seems like a far cry from the feeling we had after the bowl.

Agreed, and good point Pig Cage is another guy who deserves a scholly in reality

As someone else stated above - I see at least 5 walkons in your list.

Is Jared Small not returning at LB? He was a preseason projected starter before being injured.

I’ve heard rumblings that Jared Small and Soni Fonua aren’t returning, but all just rumors at this point. Would be both guys 6 year of college, so I kept them off. If both do return that puts this list at 81 which is our limit currently with the probation

Has this changed? I always thought they were still year to year.

To be at 79 right now is a testament to this coaching staff.

It was very possible that things could have been much worse

Yeah, back in 2015 the Power 5 conferences voted to guarantee scholarships. Or, more accurately, they voted to prohibit cancellation or non-renewal of scholarships based on athletic performance or injury. The exact bylaws are:
quote:

15.3.5.2 Reduction or Cancellation Not Permitted -- During the Period of the Award. [A]
Institutional financial aid based in any degree on athletics ability may not be reduced or canceled during the period of its award:
(a) On the basis of a student-athlete’s athletics ability, performance or contribution to a team’s success;
(b) Because of an injury, illness, or physical or mental medical condition (except as permitted pursuant to Bylaw 15.3.5.1); or
(c) For any other athletics reason.

15.3.5.3 Reduction or Nonrenewal Not Permitted -- After the Period of the Award. [A]
If a student-athlete receives athletically related financial aid in the academic year of initial full-time enrollment at the certifying institution, the following factors shall not be considered in the reduction or nonrenewal of such aid for the following academic year or years of the student-athlete's five-year period of eligibility:
(a) A student-athlete's athletics ability, performance or contribution to a team's success (e.g., financial aid contingent upon specified performance or playing a specific position);
(b) An injury, illness, or physical or mental medical condition; or
(c) Any other athletics reason.

The [A] means these bylaws only apply to "autonomy schools" - effectively meaning schools in the Power 5 conferences.

The schools can still technically offer one-year scholarships, but they can't use athletic performance or injury as reasons for non-renewal. In other words, non-renewal of scholarships at the end of the award period is subject to the same restrictions as cancellation of a scholarship during the award period. So it's effectively the same thing as a multiyear scholarship.

They can (and do) still revoke scholarships for other reasons - for example: due to ineligibility, as part of a disciplinary action, or because a player quits the team (read: notifies the school of intent to transfer).

There's also a "medical retirement" exception to the scholarship limits that allows a player to "retire" if they are unable to continue playing for medical reasons. This could be illness, injury, whatever. At that point the school can continue to provide financial aid but the player no longer hits the 85 cap because they are no longer on the team. It's a good rule because it makes sure that players with career-ending injuries can finish their degrees. However, like everything else, it's sometimes abused as a way to process players.

Still could use LB, C, TE, additional corner

IMO Baskerville returning reduces the immediate need @ LB, but C, TE & CB are areas where we need someone.
