Culp kicking the ball into the stands in driving rain.

Looks like there should be no reason to ever pooch kick.

It was into the rain. Rain was blowing sideways," Miles said. "You had no chance to have success kicking a ball. He kicked off and kicked it out of the end zone three rows deep. He knocked it out."
In a news conference last week, Miles indicated that Delahoussaye had the lead to kick field goals, but the coach suggested that Culp could snatch either position.
“I don’t know that Connor Culp might not be that guy (at place-kicker),” Miles said. “I don’t know that Culp might not be a field goal guy. He’s going to step in there and compete. We’ll have to see how Cam Gamble does.”
This isn’t anything new. Miles has praised Culp, literally, since the player signed. On national signing day in February, the coach heralded Culp as the signee most likely to receive early playing time as a rookie.
LSU’s struggles on kickoffs have been well-documented. The Tigers were 113th last year in kickoffs averaging 58.04 yards a boot. Four were kicked out of bounds, a penalty, and the Tigers had 12 touchbacks. That ranked 110th nationally.
Cameron Gamble, who kicked the majority of kickoffs last year, said earlier this month that the competition between him and Culp was an intense one.
"He’s very good on kickoffs, very strong leg. That’s coming from me," Gamble said. "I’m known for a strong leg. He has a very strong leg."

Miles suggested that Gamble will likely handle kickoffs

Inconsistency in kickoffs is inexcusable. There's no rush, no time pressure. It's been unacceptable since Hairston left.

Will Gamble split kickoffs for a third straight season? That depends on his accuracy. It’s all about hitting what Gamble calls “landmarks,” or spots on the field. In the past, LSU has positioned its kickoffs toward the left corner of the end zone. “That’s mainly what we were doing all last year and focusing on that in spring,” Gamble said. “(Miles) said the main person who’s going to have the starting job is going to kick it in the deep left.”

If they get some guys who can cover kicks like in 2011, it's a great strategy. But I can't for the life of me figure out why they kept at it after it was apparent how awful the kick coverage was last year. That's the type of hard headedness that almost cost Les his job.

Miles still trying to get cute on kickoff. It's going to be another frustrating season for special teams

Deep left end zone ,
once it crosses the goal line it doesn't matter if it goes out
once it crosses the goal line it doesn't matter if it goes out

But why take the risk if you know your kicker can boot it out anyways? Just let him boot that thing straight through the goalposts everytime

No shite, but this didn't work out well for us last year. I get the strategy but at some point they need to sit down and realize what they are trying isn't working.
It takes 2 keys to make this work: an accurate kicker with good hang time and a solid coverage unit. Last year it seemed like we had neither. I'll take a guaranteed touchback everytime over the russian roullete we have become accustomed to.

This kid could solve a lot of problems...give him a shot...or kick!

Kicking to the sideline at the goal line is a great idea, it gives you the best chance to pin the other team behind the 20. LSU teams have been excellent at that for years...we don't need to kick it out if the endzone, unless we can't find a kicker that's consistent.
Which we didn't have last year.
Which we didn't have last year.

Didn't we get a delay of game penalty on the k/o last year, or am I dreaming? Felt like special teams, in general, last year was a dream (bad).

Worst lsu special teams I've ever seen...and it's not really close either.
And peveto is still on the sidelines, dialing up plays. That dude is gonna be the death of les miles sooner or later.
