First of all, we didn't play against Saban in the '97 bowl game, we played against Notre Dame. Saban and Michigan State was 1995.

Second, people knew about the purple pants in advance of the game, and they took a poll at Ivar's during the Kentucky game and it was 90% positive, and sentiment in general at the time was, well, they're not bad, maybe could use stripes down the leg. But we're a superstitious bunch, so when LSU found a way to lose to Billy Jack Haskins and UK, then suddenly they became ugly pants.
