As the season progresses, it becomes more and more evident what parts of the team are improving and those that are not. Looking at LSU's coaching staff, it becomes very evident where some of the issues lie and perhaps its in part to coaching. For the sake of keeping this discussion civil and on topic, we will not discuss Miles as it pertains to replacement. It isn't going to happen so let's ignore it. Same for Chavis.

Some interesting notes:
We have 5 offensive coaches + 1 offensive head coach for a total of 6 coaches on that side of the ball.

In comparison, we have 3, THREE, total coaches for our defense and 1 coach for special teams. Special teams has been great this season with the exception of a couple of costly fumbles and 1 kick-off returned for a TD. Minor issues, and thus McGaughey is doing great.

Looking at defense, we clearly are struggling at developing players this past season. perhaps it is just a matter of inexperience or maybe it is lack of talent, but either way, it has regressed and having only 30% of your coaches dedicated to this seems a bit tough. While Robinson was our DL coach 3 years ago, he was also a major contributor to coaching the DL with Brick Haley. That clearly seems to have had an effect as the DL has gotten significantly weaker beyond just losing experience and talent. Add in Raymond's poor coaching/develpment at the DB position, and this has really hurt the defense.

Now, let's look at offense, which has 6 coaches.

All phases of the offense with the exception of TEs have been solid to great. Cam, Henry, Wilson, and Studs have overall done good to great jobs with their position coaching.

Ensminger being on staff makes no sense. His unit is likely the weakest on the team as far as use, and has been underutilized every year since 2009. His spot would definitely better used with a defensive specialist to help Chavis and company. Also, Les has clear experience coaching the position and could be the main person that focuses on it or have them work with the OL and WR coaches.

It is certainly not a coaching numbers issue. We keep turning a plethora of underclassmen to the NFL. We have missed on DL & LB recruits.

I doubt the structure of the staff changes. I think TMac helps out on D, and there's a GA on the defensive side as well. that's pretty much how it's gonna be IMO.

Unlike LSU, the teams with dominant defenses in the SEC have at least 4 defensive coaches (some including the head coach) that provide a more effective amount of focus to the players.

Bama for example has 4 defensive coaches outside of Saban giving them 5 on that side. Same for UF with Muschamp. It makes a huge difference.

DL recruiting in 2012 was an embarrassment. Taking only 1 DL recruit that year was as stupid as it gets, but talent alone is not the issue here. 2011 was the first year without Robinson assisting Haley with DL coaching. Those players had largely gotten a lot of development from those two combined.

Defensive line recruiting (interior line) has been thin. We only signed 3 in 2011 (freak johnson, mickey johnson, and quentin thomas). ZERO in 2012. So of our junior/sophs we only have 3 total to begin with.

One of my favorite things on the Rant.

Posters type out these long essays on what they THINK the KNOW, when in reality, noone knows shite. Every bit of this board is speculation.

Noone other than coaches and players know assignments and what goes on and what is said in the headsets of coaches or coaches meetings. What this coach does, what that coach does.

The only thing we KNOW, is what we see on the surface and most of you dissect it like you're part of what goes on in the Football Operations Building.

It isn't speculation that LSU has literally 3 coaches on the defensive side of the ball. It isn't speculation to see the under use of the TEs. Those are facts. McGaughey has only had experience on the defensive side of the ball as a Defensive Backs coach, but is not renowned for it.

From what I've noticed, you are the one that loves to talk down to everyone and kill any potential discussion (what this board is meant to be about) by people unless it agrees with your point of view.

Facts are facts. Expecting 3 guys to do the same job on defense as 5 guys+1 on offense is an issue.

We're struggling on defense because we're having to develop sophomores and freshmen instead of juniors who have gone on to the nfl.
But you're right. They should switch up the coaching assignments every few days to keep the players on top of things. And then let the coaches wives and children give it a shot. It's only fair.

You completely missed my point. I am not saying LSU's coaches right now should play musical chairs. The points is we don't need a coach dedicated to TEs which have become useless at LSU and put all defensive coaching on 3 coaches. Amazing to see defensive head coaches with great defenses happen to have 4 defensive assistants outside of themselves. They split their staffs evenly, unlike Miles and LSU.

Jernigan, Edwards, and Jones were all guys we went after. They are stud starters for FSU. We lost Torshiro Davis. All this attributes to depth with our guys leaving early. Now you're hoping that guys like Mickey and Thomas pan out. They aren't very good. That is why Lacourte is playing so early. Bain and Gilmore haven't played a down of significant football.

Special teams has been great this season

Say what? Other than our kicker being perfect on the year before Furman, which ended in horrific fashion Saturday, the rest of our special teams have been average IMO. Our punting, and punt/kickoff returns have been very inconsistent. I don't think I have to explain how Kheen has been inconsistent. And OBJ has muffed 2 punts and also let several bounce when he could've easily fair caught and saved us a 10+ yards bounce. And he's taken several kickoffs out from deep in the end zone and failed to reach the 20 yd line

No one complained about the defensive coaching assignments last year. I think Miles knows what he's doing. Let's talk again after Nov. 9th. I think everyone will be much happier then.

I think you have way too much time on your hands and if not for a punt returner fumbling and a SR QB throwing three Ints in the first half on the road, we are 9-0 and not wasting our time on coaching assignments.
