Yeah I'd assume the staff knew Cooper was leaving for a while. It wouldn't surprise me that he was doing us a favor by waiting until after everything else cooled down. Ron is a classy kat. I think we already have it narrowed down to a couple guys with a dark horse in the mix. Ready to find out who.

zook would be a good hire. if I were him i'd take the job for 1 year given the kind of exposure you would get at LSU as a NC contender.

my concern is that chavis may have too much say in the new coach. chavis is all about coaching and could care less about recruiting. we don't need a one dimensional hire.

Larry Slade at Louisville and Steele will definitely be candidates.

Yeah but has been a LBer coach pretty much his whole career. I would rather someone who has an expertise with coaching the secondary

Steele coached under Chavis at UT two different times. The first time, he was LB coach and the second time, he was DB coach. He played LB at UT.

I don't see anything wrong with Chavis helping decide who to hire. It's his defense and he knows what type of hire will get things done for him. He's not going to ignore the recruiting aspect of the hire, because I'm sure he likes 4 and 5 stars running around for him just like any other coordinator.

Carlton Buckles is a former Tiger and an up and coming coach. I also like Corey Raymond. Zook would be a homerun.

Yes

1980–1981 Tennessee (GA)
1982 Tennessee (OLB)
1983 New Mexico State (LB)
1984–1986 Oklahoma State (LB/TE)
1987–1988 Tennessee (DB)

Not much coaching experience outside of LB except with his second stint with the Vols. I'm guessing Chavis said, "I've got the linebackers, you go look after the defensive backs."

Borders would be heavily fortified. Neighboring state schools would shite their pants.

Just one more name to throw out there, Terry Joseph from Tennessee. Groomed Eric Berry and several other NFL DBs.

Here is what Saturdany Night Slant says about him:

Terry Joseph DB Coach/Recruiting Coorindator, Tennessee - Joseph is a New Orleans native that started coaching at Shaw and Destrehan high school. He spent one season as a grad assistant at LSU under Les Miles before coaching the secondary at Louisiana Tech under Derek Dooley. Joseph followed Dooley to Tennessee.

Like Raymond, Joseph has ties to the state and to LSU that make him a good fit. He already recruits the state of Louisiana for Tennessee so the transitioin would be an easy one. Since he holds a coordinator position for the Vols, it may take some additional money to get him away.

chavis is not known as a big time recruiter either. so I don't think recruiting is nearly as high to him as coaching. not to say recruiting doesn't matter to him but its way below coaching abilities.

Chavis joined Tennessee in 1989 and didn't become d-coordinator there until 95 so I still don't see where they coached together.

If he's not strong at recruiting, it would only make sense that he finds someone to do it for him. Well, it makes sense to me.

I thought he coached at Tennessee for his entire career which was why he was so emotional about his release. If I'm wrong, then my bad.

And if we would get rid of Ensminger and add Brewster stock for Depends would go through the roof.

John Chavis and Kevin Steele are best friends since high school. Kevin Steele was in Chavis hotel room after NCG. I wouldn't be surprised if Chavis pushed for this.

Okay, but he is a LBers coach. Has been for pretty much his whole career. It's not like he took the position because it was open. I would rather a guy who has worked extensively with secondaries

Just because he is not great at recruiting doesn't mean he's blind to the value of having great recruiters on the staff.

This new hire doesn't have to be either/or. We can hire someone who is a great recruiter and coach.

Needs to be home run. Good coach and great recruiter. I hope LSU had some sort of warning that this was coming so that Miles has a short list ready.

NFL:
Greg Jackson - 49ers (LSU)
Adrian White - Bills
Perry Carter - Texans
Marlon McCree - Jaguars
Otis Smith - Chiefs (from La)
Joe Whitt - Packers
Deshea Townsend - Cardinals
Rod Woodson - Raiders

Ron Zook

COLLEGE:
Duane Akina - Texas
Corey Raymond - Nebraska (LSU)
Terry Joseph - Tennessee (La guy, LSU ga)
Carlton Buckels - Baylor (LSU)
Mike Reed - NC State
Larry Slade - Louisville (with Chavis at UT)
Torrian Gray - Va Tech
Harlen Barnett - Michigan State (LSU ga)
Tony Hughes - Miss St
Van Malone - Tulsa
