Related question- How did Ronnie Vinson qualify for a redshirt, because I saw somewhere where he did. I'm pretty sure I saw him in some games last year with Bama being one of them.

FRESHMAN SEASON (2010)
Granted a redshirt after suffering an injury just three games into the season ... Played in only three games ... Saw action on special teams and served as a reserve defensive back ... Made two tackles - a solo stop against Florida and an assisted tackle versus Tennessee.

there you go startin' stuff!

I was wondering the same thing, per his bio though, he only played in the first 3 games. and if that quoted rule about fewer than 30% of the team's games and all before the halfway point is valid, guessing that's how it happened.

Why is this so hard for folks to grasp?

One snap in competition...you have NO redshirt.

Play a limited number of games, then get injured, you can and usually will be granted a medical hardship year. This is commonly referred to as a medical redshirt.

If a kid played, and he was granted another year of eligibility...it is because he was granted a hardship year.
