The Big XII, however, was having its best two-year stretch ever.
When the combined scores of the conference title games for those two years is 112-6, it means you've got two of the best teams in the country and not much else.
2004
Besides OU and Texas, they had TT who was a pretender at that time when it came to big games...lost to OU and UT by a combined 45 pts. TT's only decent win came over a demoralized Cal team.
2005
UT was the only really good team in the conference. They beat the next best team TT by 35 points and slaughtered OU who wasn't that good that year, by 33. No one in the North division was worth anything.
And this has nothing with SEC homerism...I just think the Big XII was and is overrated as a whole. It's not to say there are no good teams in there.

And this is where Matt's point that the voters don't get enough credit comes into play. With the exception of 2003, the only consequential polls are the last ones before the bowls. On these polls there are only a few consequential decisions (Who's #2 in the BCS, teams whose ranking determines a BCS bid). I believe the voters take these decisions very seriously and overall do a very good job.

That is the psychology that most people miss. That is why the LSU prediction LSU matt made (and I independently made to my mirror LOL) was a lock a few years back.
When push comes to shove the final vote will be taken very seriously and the right decisions will be made. 2 weeks out voters are just checking boxes. We were going to jump Ga and VT once they thought about it.
I am still a playoff guy though!

After some early season shakeups, most people need to see a certain degree of stability in polls. There's generally no need to shake things up because this stuff tends to sort itself out and they take seriously the few key decisions that don't. If polls were as sensitive as some suggest they should be it would really drive people nuts. And don't get me started on those who think you have to watch every ULL game before you can be qualified to decide that they aren't #1.
The BCS is a playoff; it should be 4 teams, but no more.
