Isn't that what this is most likely about? Dollars rule, maintaining nationwide interest is critical, the committee fears the country has SEC-versus-Clemson finals fatigue, so they manipulate the rankings to ensure it doesn't happen yet again. "Complete team" here translates to "not SEC."

Bama sitting at 5 now does not necessarily mean they get in over two teams that each could potentially win two more games, including a conference championship.
