I was never a huge fan of Jimbo as an OC. I always thought he was an incredible QB developer, but sometimes the playcalling was just far too conservative considering the talent we had (Auburn 04 & 06 anyone?). I was so excited when Crowton came and we saw the reigns taken off in 07. In retrospect, it looks like it was fools gold.

I can't tell you how angry it makes me when people mention "winning with Saban's players," especially in regards to 07. Those guys must have learned a lot in one or two camps or while running with the scout team. I'm sure saban personally babysat all of them. Anyway, that is an intellectually weak argument. If the problem isn't Saban's players, then who is it? Ask yourself, who was here after Saban? Crowton didn't seem to have any problem calling the plays in 07. Why? Maybe the glue that held things together in 07 were Jimbo Fisher's players. I don't think Gary Crowton's biggest weakness is playcalling. I think it is in teaching the players, coming up with a coherent philosophy, and communicating it to the players. Our offensive players lack discipline and technique and struggle with basic execution. Crowton had a core of players in 07 that had been through 2 or 3 years with Fisher, who was a good teacher, especially in regards to QBs. If you think about it, this explains Crowton's MO of being good for a year or two and then falling off. He falls flat because he can't teach the younger players that he and his staff bring in.

With all this said, if Crowton can't effectively teach, then he doesn't belong here. He needs to go, and go now.

My guess is unless Crowton steps down, he will be back.

I sure hope so! his record and not just his record here is bad, he has taken good teams in the past and has gone striaght down. his adjustments at half time are still a secrect becuase he doesnt adjust. I really believe at half time he goes and gets a coke and popcorn.I kinda like miles he knows whats happening on the field because he watches the playback..maybe they should make him and crowten sit in the stands and watch the game at least one time maybe they would see what the fans see.Maybe his headphones are tuned to wwl radio and he is listening to the game.

Crowton is an enigma. I really think he understands X's and O's as much as anybody. And he sets up some HR plays. Still recall Danielson scratching his head after Perrilloux ran an option (you guessed it) to the short side of the field against USCe only to be followed by Colt David's romp into the end zone.

He was great in '07 and other than UF and OM we scored enough points to win every game in '08. If I'm not mistaken only OM scored more on UF in '08 and only UF and Utah scored more against Bama than we did.

That's why watching our O in '09 has been nothing short of mystifying.

Many have pointed out that this is GC's trend at all his stops. But there are lots of factors as to why offensive production declines and it may be too simple to blame it all on "3 year Crowtony". In our case, the loss of Perrilloux with a huge gap behind him at QB is significant as is the poor OL play. Young QB's and poor OL play are a challenge for any OC.

But here are my complaints (pray tell if not legit):
1) Crowton has known what he had to work with at QB for some time. Yet, he insisted on sticking to a complex system as opposed to simplifying things to fit his personnel. He seemed incapable of adapting things to fit his personnel.
2) Why couldn't he have installed a suite of (a half-dozen or so) plays with Russell Shepard; similar to Perrilloux in '07?
3) Why abandon something simple that works for something complex that doesn't (example: Keiland in the 1st half against OM (8 carries/44 yds). 3rd qtr (2 carries/6 yds). 4th qtr (1 carry/injury). I realize we seldom ran the ball well but we were so doing against OM in the 1st half.

If I thought Crowton could be fixed I'd say keep him. He understands the X's and O's. Just needs to understand the name of the game is to score points, control the clock, and dominate - not maintain a loyalty to offensive sophistry.

An Offense that is ranked lower than 70 here is unacceptable. Too much talent. Even with a young QB and a poor O line. That's why you coach. To exploit your team's strengths and your opponents weaknesses.

Is the play calling what one would expect from an OC? Just one example, option and option to the short side of the field that didn't work except for TH in the last game.
