You are forgetting all the times the pitcher threw a perfect strike only for it to be called a ball. Yeah, the umps have been really bad the entire college world series in almost every game

Did anybody on OSU message boards go to the affirmative action ump scenario? No, not a politically correct state like Oregon.

no it's not. it absolutely has to be consistent for both teams and it was. could the zone have been tighter? sure. this is a known part of the game. every player at every level knows they need to adjust. lsu did. osu didn't. end of story

It's a shame their elite pitchers can't take advantage and hit the same spots as us

It's so ridiculous to whine over an ump who is consistent both ways

It's crap when they aren't and he was

You knew what to expect. Can't help they aren't as good at pitching or hitting today
We've had this discussion on here before; I'm going there again....

Umps varying strike zones are indeed part of the game. In addition to adjusting, many MLB teams and pitchers/catchers scout umps too.

If it's part of the game, just like your pitcher being off or breaking ball not breaking, or any other host of variables you prepare for it.

Yeah, it might be hard for a college team to scout umps in a NCAA tournament. Not impossible. And there's always "in-game scouting", which if you don't adjust why scout.

Nolan Ryan kept his own personal database on umps. Varitek and Wakefield did the same. If you can limit the influence of variables, which different ump's zones are, then you do it. If you don't, shame on you. You don't blame the variable.

Bitching about umpiring and officiating, then go get your arse out there and call games. Knock off of work early and use your time to go call jv games and high school games and see what its like when people treat you like shite. The umpire was calling a final in the college world series, he's probably been around awhile and the teams should know how he calls. If he gave some strikes that weren't there, tough shite. The coaches should know this might happen going in if they are doing their job. LSU beat OSU period.

Yes, it's bullshite conventional wisdom. Being consistent for both teams is the bare minimum of standards. Real standards require you to be critical of an umpire calling strikes on pitches that are inside the right handed batters box. Sure, it's better if it's consistent for both teams, but it is still garbage.

It's a shame that with everything on the line - the biggest game and event of these kids' lives - the umpire was horrible. The damned plate is supposed to be there for a reason; it's either over the plate (including the black) or it's not. I watched one called strike that split the batter's box line. That's 6" off the plate which is pathetic. The ump should be reprimanded and warned to either get it together or go back to umping high school games. They ought to go back to the old days when the umpire was directly behind the catcher so they can see how to call the outside pitch correctly.
