A-rod had the power numbers to make the transition to third easier

huh

Corner infield is a power position. They don't make enough plays to justify having someone play there every day for defensive purposes only. Jeter for the most part was a singles hitter with average to above average gap to gap power. A-rod was a gap to gap power hitter with above average speed. When you are building a team that is what you want your shortstop and third base to be like at the plate.

Dude Jeter had sick range early in his career, and a big arm. I heard a comment yesterday about these metrics you speak of, and they also classify Correa as a below average fielder. I don't know much about the metric, but I know enough about baseball to know these guys are not below average, they are smooth, have (had) above average arms, make the spectacular plays, make the easy plays. Jeter is an all-time great. We are talking about Jeter and A-rod, the only player right now with the potential to play SS with the same ability on the Houston Astros roster, is CC. Until Bregman shows me he can make the adjustment from college to the bigs, he will never be in the conversation to replace Correa. I understand you want power on the corners and all of those things, but a team will not take a great defender and replace him with a lesser, just to get someone on the field. You want to be strongest defensively up the middle. Correa will be great! In some peoples eyes, he already is!

I don't know that I see Bregman getting traded, at least I wouldn't do it

I think it would be smarter to develop him as your third base starter by 2017 if he can grasp it. The Astros have some highly regarded young arms that should make appearances relatively soon.

They are in the very fortunate position of being a playoff team and contenders while also being stocked with loads of farm talent. Combined with the young core and team friendly salaries they have, I would hold onto these other young predicted good players and make a window of competing that can last a decade, rather than deal them off now for one arm.

To clarify my point, Bregman will have to be really really good to unseat Correa, by really good, I mean really good defensively and a productive enough bat for this move to make sense. (me saying as good as Jeter, was to paint a picture back to a time when the Yankees had this issue).

Yup, I would push to develop at 3rd (for Houston's sake), I just don't know if that's best for Bregs. I think he could be a jam up 2nd baseman on most teams in a few years. What really hurts him is that Correa is actually a few months younger than him and Altuve is not very old. Would be nice if one of them were older and he could be the potential replacement. Mainly meaning Altuve, because I don't think Bregamn is an everyday MLB SS.

You're right, he isn't moving either one of them. They could easily get him a good amount of reps at 3rd in the minors and let him play short most of the time to still showcase him there if they want to trade him.
