Also, 5 game samples are what they are. I could pick out 5 games from JJ last year where we surely outdid what we've done this year.

You mean cherry pick?

While I agree with the importance of the scoring offense, it is interesting to see that total offense (90th in 2011) and passing offense (101 after 5 games)

I thought so

Everything revolves around the minimal turnovers and sacks compared to last year. In fact..we are first in the SEC in fewest sacks allowed and among the leaders in the country in turnover margin.

That is all you need to know

It's a fair comparison if the same period is used.

How so?

Different schedules.
Different coaches
Different coordinators.
Different personnel.

There's almost nothing the same about the two teams IMO.

I think the LSU offense is substantially better partially for the emergence of Beckham. He could have helped Lee in 08, JJ in 09 and both last year. We haven't had a sure handed guy like him, in a while, for one. Secondly, we haven't had a guy who can turn a 5 yard gain into a 50 yard TD due to open field prowess since... Josh Reed?

That's exactly what you are doing....

The schedule dictated these are the first five games, but that's just as arbitrary as any distinction.

It was 45th last year.

While I agree with the importance of the scoring offense, it is interesting to see that total offense (90th in 2011) and passing offense (101 after 5 games) is no longer of value in the minds of some after those stats where continually whined and moaned over by some alllllllllll last season.

Go figure.......

No, the bigger thing is that LSU has only had 3 turnovers to start the season to date in 5 games.

Last year, LSU had 7 INTs and 6 fumbles in the first 5 games for 13 total. Yeah, the offense hasn't improved at all.

Take out the Defensive/ST TDs from this year's offense (3 of them) and LSU still is scoring 33.8 ppg from their offense. Do that for the first 5 games last season and it is 21.6 points per game by the offense. Even if you take out TM7's fumble return to the 1 against WVU, LSU's offense still scores 10 more points per game this season through 5 games at 32.4 ppg.

The 2010 LSU defense was very good.
THe 2011 LSU defense is a different type of animal.

They are giving us unbelievable field position, routinely, as well as putting points on the board.

When you play D like that, it will improve all facets of your team.

The '10 defense was solid, but a lot of teams sustained drives against us, not to mention how many big plays were allowed. That's not happening this year. We're suffocating.

If you take the 5 highest scores form last year, we averaged 37.8. JJ was 64/94 (68%) for 827 yards (165/g), 4 TD's and 2 picks in those games.

In the first five games this year, Lee is 64/108 (59.3%) for 793 yards (159/g), 7 TD's and 1 pick.

In Jefferson's five games, we went 4-1.

Dude, we've forced less turnovers/game so far this season at 2.4 than last season at 2.5. The defenses are NOT that much different.

The offense giving up the ball is.

Since you guys have brought it up so much, "It's about the points!"

We're giving up a TD fewer a game on defense this year. 40 fewer yards a game.

And that's really not a difference.

That's because we played a weaker schedule last year in the first 5 games.

Compare that in the first 5 games last year, LSU averaged 326.6 ypg. LSU is averaging nearly 25 more yards per game this season compared to that rate.

Right

And short fields = less yards for an offense

How do people not understand that?

6 damn yards difference in yards per game. After 5 games and our toughest Ds coming, versus last years whole season. Why is anyone knighting for anything. It seems the best we got is pretty damn mediocre.

Last Year vs. This year.
122 pts vs. 190 pts.
24.4ppg vs. 38 ppg

Yards per game means nothing if you cannot put it in the endzone. If you throw for 500 yards and only put up 21 pts, most of the time you will lose. If you have 200 yards passing and 150 yards rushing and put up 40 points most of the time you will win.

I understand, but we have much longer sustained drives, and we had more or as many ST and D scores last year early.

You claimed it was, not me. You are the one claiming this defense is another type of animal, but statistically, it's not as big a difference through 5 games as you want to claim.

Scoring through 5 games:
2010 - 12.4
2011 - 12.8

Turnovers forced through 5 games:
2010 - 2.2
2011 - 2.4

Both gave up a huge passing day to an opponent
Both controlled rushing offense pretty well

There is no real difference yet.

And yet you are comparing stats from the entire season and then portions of last season. Make up your mind.

We are averaging nearly 25 more yards per game through the first 5 of each season. Yet, you keep harping on the whole season total then comparing the partial season.
