Best RB of that “stellar” bunch that came over to play for Curly. Robert Davis and Robert Toomer were the “stars”; local Kevin Franklin and David Butler were the next crop; Jay Johnson and Artie Moore were the “bottom level” of what was supposed to be a premier group of class of ‘92 running backs.

Davis looked the part early with back-to-back 100 yard rush games against Aggies and Miss State. By the following season, Jay Johnson was head and shoulders above and Davis dropped off. Toomer became a fullback full time and Butler became a safety. In fact, Butler played a lot in the Independence Bowl blowout win over Saban. Franklin — well, frankly, we recruited the wrong CHS Bear and should have gotten Warrick Dunn instead…many scouts liked Franklin better. He was a bust. Artie Moore was gone after.a season.

Jay Johnson was the catalyst in a big win over Ole Piss in 93. And a week later, he was the offensive MVP in the Pigs Fly game. He was the best TB we had between Harvey Williams and Kevin Faulk.
