he may not have the grades to even get back into high school. seriously if he comes into the fold would it be after one or two years at a JC?

did LSU ever offer him? I thought he was a La Tech project.

edit: these are his comments after the LSU camp:

“I went to the LSU camp in June and they didn’t have an offensive lineman there that could block me,” said Steward. “The coaches loved me. They really liked how quick I was off of the ball and how I got off of blocks.”

I wonder what O Lineman were at that camp, any idea?

He has no chance of qualifying to play Div IA. If he has th desire to keep going, it would have to be either JUCO or Prep School. Even then, he would have a lot of work to do. The guy that said he officiated one of his games is correct though. When he turns it up, there isn't a lineman in the state that was able to block him.

A bit off tangent but still relevant- does it bother anyone else that in this day and age kids like this have "trouble qualifying"? I mean really. If you were a stud as a sophomore wouldn't you work to make sure you could get a college scholarship? Things like this are a failure for the entire system and bug the heck out of me.

How does something like that happen? How was he eligible to play football if he didn't have the grades? How is he graduating if he is not at minimum, eligible to attend the state's public-flagship university? I think the teachers in Breaux Bridge have a lot to answer for. They have done Churphy and the citizens of the state a disservice.

teachers

and counselors and parents. The greatest failure of American society in the past 70 years has been our disastrous educational system. We still rely on the immediate post WW2 model of teaching all kids as if they are going to college. What we should be doing is similar to the european system-as a freshman you decide on univeristy track or vocational track. In university track you get the counseling and teaching to go on to college. If there is no way you want to go to college- you spend time as an apprentice to an electrician/roofer/builder/painter etc. and learn enough to balance a check book and be a useful person in society. By trying to get everyone into the college track , we get kids like Churphy dropped. Once he started excelling on the field and expressed a desire to go to college his parental unit(s), counselors and teachers should have worked with him to get this done.
Sorry for the rant but the way these kids throw away their futures pisses me off.

He needs a good advisor/ coach to help him in JUCO -- the kid is amazing, but his academics are sad.

and the most important part of that system is Mr. Stewart. we are all for quality education and if the system failed Churphy Stewart then that is unacceptable but that probably isn't the case. Stewart sounds just like some of the guys I hooped with at ps156/Rucker back in my day. there were nba caliber dudes coming out of the sky who you knew were never going to see the inside of the Garden (without a ticket) and would probably never get to celebrate their 35th birthday. wasted on horse or wasted in nam. seaux it geauxs.

I agree with you that the majority of this falls on Churphy. I think that the main problem we have in America is this prolonged adolescence that lets teenagers be aimless for so long. What a kid like Churphy(and every kid IMHO) needed was someone to give him a come to Jesus meeting as a freshman/soph- get your grades up if you want to play in college or you are going the vocational/tech route.

They made him appear to be eligible long enough to play football for how many seasons? Then turn around and lets him know that he craps out if he has any aspirations for college. That is just pathetic.

I am sure that there is blame enough to go around, but we know that there are still people in the U.S. with a history of not a single family member ever having gone to college. Is this the case here? I don't know; but most of the blame should and must fall squarely on the educators in Breaux Bridge on this one. I only hope he gets the resources and help to remediate what was allowed to happen to him.

if i can get back to my question, in situations like these when everything is needed (grades and test scores), hell graduation from high school is step one, but in cases like churpy, two years of a JC are required yea?

more than a few called him him the best DT in the state, down year at DT but still. i hope someday we're talking about this guy as a success story. if a D-1 prospect doesn't think school is important, just consider this young man's recruitment. shh. hush. hear that? that's churpy's phone.

i will say this, he'd have to be/he'll have to be some kind of fierce to earn a scholly at LSU with the beastly DT's on their way in 2011.
