Bubba the Bomb Technician

East Texas guy that I have been watching this guy for a while. Yesterday in Dallas I finally got to see him up close. He is currently Kohl's 5th ranked kicker for class of 2018. Family is from Pasadena, Texas ( right outside Houston).

The ball roars off his foot. He can bury it in the end zone with hang times north of 3.5, but JESUS this kid is a laser guided mortar launcher on FGs. Hit a couple 49 yders last year in games and his coach let him try one from 70. ( I was told he has a huge tailwind) I watched him crank out 60+ multiple times in a row. His balls are consistent in launch, height, direction, ball speed and rotation. Can also punt if needed.

He has an offer from Army, but I spoke with his family yesterday and they are hoping for and confident a power 5 offer is coming and mom told me they are hoping he stays fairly close to home.

If we offered him, he takes a RS in 2019 when we are down to Jack (SR) and Connor (JR)...we lose Jack in 2020, that would leave us Connor as a senior and Bubba ready to roll.

And c'mon.....who wouldn't want a kicker named Bubba.

Excellent mechanics, the trajectory is perfect. Probably UT bound.

Nope. UT has offered Cameron Dicker out of Lake Travis, Texas. He and Bubba are both Class of 2018.

I'm not sure of the hs rules over there, but was he kicking off a tee for the fgs?

Bubba takes it off the deck. Most elite level kickers will because scouts know there is a difference between two guys charting the same numbers, but one is on a tee and one is not.

If a kid has college aspirations he generally will try to start taking it off the grass in his soph or junior year. Depending on the style of kicker ( ie foot position) the transition from 2" tee to 1' tee to grass is just a rotation of the foot to bring a greater surface area of cuneiform bone/metatarsal bone onto the sweet spot of the ball.

Seems to me that kicking off of a 1 foot tee would create a a better chance of your arse-bone contacting the ground.

What's it going to take to get him?

It's quite an adjustment getting those Phalanges bones out of the way, that's when kicks get ugly.

Had to laugh at myself. Thanks for the catch. Fingers sometimes hit buttons faster than the brain can process

Looks like we'd be getting on him too late. Miami all over it with coach visit and CB's now.

Miami is in a good position to land him since they have a special teams coach (Hartley) who is young and also very accomplished. He was Georgia's director of recruiting in 2015 under Richt and has coached top kicker talent and NFL pk Walsh.

Miles would have already offered. That's the one thing I give credit on, he believed in having a stable of kickers. Orgeron doesn't seem to have the same aggression in that department.

Yep. I saw this the other day when the offer came. I knew he would not last long. BTW...I was wrong about his KO hang times. I did not have a clock on him. His Hangs are around 4.5 and he was landing the ball in the parking lot. He out charted every other kicker at the Showcase Camp.

I knew he would not be on the board long. I STILL think if we offered we would have a shot.....Pasadena is only a 4 hr drive from Baton Rouge.

This is what worries me. I can see O saying something like... we just need someone who can kick it between the posts. But the fact is, this is one of the most important positions on the team. Kickers are often the leading scorers on the team at seasons end and are often the deciding factor for close games, which can make or break a season. The best kickers want to surround themselves with the best mentors who have been in their shoes and they also want to have confidence in the plan for their development. I sure hope Coach O has something up his sleeve.

Just look at the lack of a ST coach for this year... ST's won us a couple games in 2011, and when it's been crap it's affected games.

You are preaching to the choir. Just to give you an idea of how in-tune CEO is on special teams - - last year he told Colby during a game, something along the lines of " I don't know anything about kicking....but just put it kick the shite out of it and send it between the posts."

We need a GREAT ST coach. Mark my words, this will cost us games. The ST Coach by committee is the same as ignoring the position.

They have meetings with Greg McMahon, he tells them what to do.

There's no room for a kicker in 2018 especially with 2 underclassmen kickers already on the roster.

Meeting are not coaching. And, while I agree they will not take a kicker this year.....you always MAKE ROOM for a guy with crazy talent. Baxa is one of those guys. Just saying'

There may be only two or three other kickers I would recommend taking this year, but Baxa is the freaking bomb
