MONTGOMERY – Senior quarterback Sam Gibson and senior wide receiver Earl Lucas connected on two big-play touchdown passes in the third quarter Friday night as defending Class 6A state champion Prattville rolled over Carver-Montgomery 37-0 in the first game of the 2009 al.comChampions Challenge prep football classic at Cramton Bowl Friday night.

The fourth annual al.comChampions Challenge, hosted by the Alabama High School Athletic Directors and Coaches Association of the AHSAA, concludes Saturday with a doubleheader at Cramton Bowl beginning at 5 p.m. Defending 3A state champion Leeds plays 2008 3A semifinalist T.R. Miller in the first game. Hoover, a 16-13 loser to Prattville in last year’s Super 6 Class 6A finals, faces Oxford in the nightcap at 7:30. All three contests are considered preseason games and will not count on either team’s team record.

Playing before one of the largest crowds in recent Cramton Bowl history, Prattville’s defense completely throttled the Wolverines offense, limiting Carver to only 32 total yards including minus-34 rushing yards on 32 attempts.

Carver’s defense kept the Wolverines in the contest for a while, however, until Lucas caught a 19-yard TD strike from Gibson with 7:05 remaining in the third quarter to turn a 17-0 halftime lead into a 24-0 margin. Seven minutes later, with only five ticks left in the period, Lucas streaked down the middle of the field to catch Gibson’s perfect throw on the dead run at the 15 on the way to a 48-yard touchdown connection.

Mario Davis scored the Lions’ final touchdown on a 5-yard run with 6:58 to play in the game. The TD was set up by his own 56-yard pass reception from Justin Thomas one play earlier.

Prattville finished with 145 yards rushing on 45 carries and another 213 yards passing. Gibson, an LSU verbal commitment, was 9-of-14 for 146 yards and Thomas finished 3-of-4 for 67 yards. Lucas totaled four catches for 108 yards. Desmond Haley was the game’s leading rusher with 83 yards on 13 carries. He scored on a 2-yard run in the second quarter and Cory Lee scored on a 1-yard run in the same period. Chris Kennedy kicked a 27-yard field goal and three extra points for the Lions.

Carver quarterback Reggie Aaron was 9-of-19 passing for 66 yards. He had one interception, a diving pick by Lions safety Nick Perry on a ball that bounced off a receiver’s chest near midfield. Prattville’s defense, led by Cory Lee’s 11 tackles, swarmed the Wolverines for 10 sacks totaling 52 yards in losses and had 22 tackles behind the line of scrimmage out of 32 rushing plays. Lee had three sacks.

Carver senior London Pitts led all tacklers with 13 stops.

So...9 for 14, 146 yds, 2 TD, 0 INT?

What about rushing?

I watched the first half and then fell asleep at halftime. Gibson has a nice arm and his accuracy was not bad at all. His listed 6'2" height also looks pretty legit to me. IMO he is definitely a depth possibility for LSU down the line if we have another catastrophe.

Nice pickup.

Agree ColtsTiger,I like the pick-up,if we can hold him. With Garrett getting the Redshirt, and Zach Lee ? MLB,we need that bridge guy,and someone who could back-up in a pinch. Also a strong 4.4 athlete that has cover skills in the secondary. He's the perfect hybrid guy to be in this class.

I think you guys can hold Gibson. He didnt grow up in Alabama so if Bama/Auburn offer i dont think he would listen like he would if he grew up on Auburn/Bama
