Do athletes still get a”free” transfer if their head coach is dismissed or takes another job?
I attempted a search, but was not successful.

As far as I can tell, the only impact of a head coaching change is that players can enter the portal immediately (regardless of whether the portal window has opened). I don’t think it gives an extra “free” transfer beyond the one-time exception.

Is my memory correct that prior to the portal being available that an athlete could transfer without penalty if the Head Coach left??

Doing some digging, it appears the previous exception was limited to incoming freshmen whose head coaches leave before the fall semester.
So if a kid enrolled during the summer and their head coach resigned or got fired immediately thereafter, they could transfer and play in the upcoming season. But the exception did not actually apply to returning players who were already on the team. In fact, I’m not sure it even applied to early enrollees.
The NLI also contains a provision that releases athletes from their obligations if a head coach leaves after signing, which is probably more important when it comes to incoming freshmen (especially with so many signing during the early period nowadays).
