LSU had some talent on its campus Saturday and one of the best was Nathan Pickering, a four-star defensive lineman out of Seminary (Miss.).

"It was really a great experience. I got to see everything LSU has to offer and it was amazing."

The 6-foot-5, 277 pound junior got a lot of time with head coach Ed Orgeron. Their time together left a mark on Pickering.

"I love coaches who want to coach you and really want to talk to you and that is what coach O did Saturday. A lot of coaches just tell you what you want to hear, but coach O was honest and that really stood out to me.

"We just talked about the overall program and I believed every word he said. I believe in him as a coach too and what he can do with the LSU program."

"It was no surprise how much I liked it at LSU because I have been there before, but this visit boosts them up in my mind," said Pickering. "It is a great school, I have always loved LSU and I have a great visit."

Ree, I'll get excited when all these 4 and 5 stars start signing with LSU, but thanks for posting the tidbits. Sadly, recruiting under Orgeron is like the rest of the football program right now...all talk, little in the way of results

Its a long process and you have to build the relationships. This is a start. No one expects to land all the kids we hear positive things from but if there's enough of them then we will land our fair share.

It is a long process, I agree. That makes it all the more hard to stomach when we lose Marvin Wilson and Pat Surtain after reading all the propaganda for three years saying they were all LSU.

Seems like Orgeron is losing a lot more of these kids than he's getting.

No it’s not. We filled some holes we had depth wise, but this was the worst class we’ve had since Miles first year. That class was only ranked low because he didn’t have time to really recruit and I believe we only signed 13 that year.

It's the lowest ranked class we've had in like 15 years. I guess I have a different definition of success and "outstanding" than a lot of posters on the recruiting board.

No I agree with you. Recruiting was the main reason O was hired. 2019 is loaded in Louisiana, he better win the recruiting battles in state this year or he’s screwed.

Your comments diminish the the class as a whole. Individual positions such as CB we're disappointing and I agree but the lines were both good hauls.

I don’t see how anyone can call a class outstanding when you ranked 5th in your conference and 15th overall.

Eaux lost an out-of-state DT that was never committed for the 2017 class.

Eaux lost an out-of-state CB that was never committed for the 2018 class.

How about everybody's Lord and Savior who just this past class lost two recruits who were COMMITTED.

five-star Alabama linebacker commit Quay Walker flipped and signed with the Bulldogs.

Talented four-star defensive tackle Bobby Brown has flipped his commitment from Alabama to Texas A&M and has signed with the Aggies

Losing recruits happens to pretty much every team in every class. Losing COMMITTS can also happen, even to Saban.

I think it’s one of those things where the guy that spurns is sticks out in your mind more than the guy who commits.

For example, this year we lost Goodrich and Surtain but we landed Marshall and Chase.

That’s 2 for 4.

Last year we lost Wilson but we got Chaisson and Shelvin.

You win some, lose some but the losses sting more.

You cannot get an accurate portrayal of a class for a couple few years at least.

The 2015 class was ranked fifth in the nation with 3 five stars and 10 4-stars. Three of the four stars and two of the five stars transferred from or left LSU.

Was that 5th ranked class better than this year's class? Won't know for a few years. If they re-ranked the 2015 class right now, it would not be.

Dandy Don's mentioned him also as a MS visitor. I think he said he was also a 4-star.

I think this guy could become a 5* when everything is said and done. Very athletic for a big man and will probably play around 300lbs in college. Very smart! He would be a great get.

Not even close. Rankings wise maybe. But this class cannot be judged for at least a couple years.

Advocate interview with Dave Aranda:

"Aranda’s wide-ranging interview with The Advocate centered on a defensive front that this program needed to rebuild. In fact, many believe LSU’s defensive front seven — and not quarterback — is the reason for the dip that began after the 2011 season, a downward spiral that led to the firing of former coach Les Miles in 2016."

"Tigers signed most D-linemen in a class since at least 2004"

"beefed up what is overwhelmingly thought to be the one area separating the Southeastern Conference from all other leagues: depth, speed and size on the defensive front."

"We had to address some deficiencies up front just in numbers. I think we did that,” Aranda said. “The ability to reload through the course of a game (with) our front seven, to feel good about who’s there and what they’re doing and to not miss a beat from when you started the game, that cannot be overvalued."

LSU DC Dave Aranda says Tigers' signing class restocked a pivotal area: the defensive front[/link

Are you going by the same rankings that had Greedy Williams ranked as the 16th best LSU recruit for the 2016 class? The one that also had Greedy ranked as the 4th best defensive back in that class.

Greedy it one of the top 3 or 4 players on the entire LSU team and he was only ranked the 16th best recruit in that class. How does that happen?

And got Jacob Phillips to flip from Oklahoma six days prior to signing day. Phillips was the #1 player in the nation at his position.
