Yeah I started coaching 7 years ago and there's nothing like it (coaching youth that is). I got hooked the first year, we had a kid who would never run forward in an Oklahoma drill - for tackling or running with the ball. I stood behind him one drill so he couldn't run backwards, he blew up the kid in front of him and stunned us all. We congratulated him, told him he did awesome and asked if it hurt or if he was scared. He said it didn't hurt, it was awesome and that there's nothing to be scared of. Next time up I'm not behind him and he runs backwards again - I come up to him and ask him why he ran backwards and his response was "I need you behind me coach." I was hooked from that moment on, did convince him he didn't need me behind him.
I've seen kids play that you look at them and your first thought is they shouldn't even be on the field (little kid we call "speedy" is like that) and then they are absolute beasts. Then you've got the 6' 240lb 9 year old that cries before tackle drills and would rather play patty cake than put someone half their size on their butts. When you get to high school you lose a bit of that atmosphere - I don't think anything at high school can be as rewarding as taking a kid nobody thinks can or should play football due to their size and turning that kid into an absolute stud. I don't know if our Speedy will be much at the high school level due to his size, but I'm glad I was able to participate in coaching him while he could still be a stud.
This video of Speedy doesn't show him making a tackle, what it does show is a glimpse into how aggressive he can be:

Here's a little bit of Darrius Triplett - who is a pee wee superstar, hopefully it can translate later for him:

Then there's Darquez Williams - this kid is going to have a huge frame and he's a solid player already. I think he's got the ingredients to turn into the best player overall that I sent up to the middle school this year. I would think of all the kids he's got the most potential to be a D1 prospect:

Without getting all doctored up, I use teeth as a reference. You can easily spot early/late bloomers like that... My son had 4 adult teeth two years ago, some classmates had 10. Vice versa.
