LSU coach Ed Orgeron makes unique promise to 2019 4-star QB recruit

ORLANDO — While 4-star Houston (Texas) quarterback Grant Gunnell is currently a Texas A&M commitment, that hasn’t stopped LSU.
And, should the Tigers flip the talented 2019 quarterback from the Aggies, LSU coach Ed Orgeron made a unique promise to Gunnell.
“He said if I commit, he’ll bring the tiger down to my signing day,” Gunnell said, with a chuckle.
The tiger, of course, is Mike the VIII (formerly Harvey), which officially became LSU’s mascot in August 2017. Gunnell — admitting that it’s highly unlikely that Orgeron would pull off such a stunt — said it’s not the only way he knows he’s the top priority for LSU’s 2019 quarterback recruiting.
“I text with him every other day, probably,” Gunnell said. “He’s texting my parents like every morning. He’s a great guy.”
A de-commitment from Texas A&M could be in the works, and LSU would likely be the leader should that happen. Gunnell committed to Texas A&M when Kevin Sumlin was the head coach; while he’s spoken with new coach Jimbo Fisher, he said the recent string of Texas A&M offers to dual-threat quarterbacks has given him pause.
“It’s kind of messing with my head, so I’m not really sure,” Gunnell said. “If you want to offer pro-style, it’s different. It’s not the competition. If he wants dual-threat, I’m not going to be able to play for him.”
Gunnell is the nation’s top-ranked pro-style quarterback in the 2019 class, according to 247Sports.

The rant is not going to like this.

Would be funny if O did bring the game mascot when he was thinking the actual tiger.

That would be hilarious, although it's probably against NCAA rules.

Eddie O seems to have been influenced by the Miles regime.

So would this lead anyone to believe Sumlin could be a candidate for OC?

No, man, a lot of people would have a fit on here if they even considered Sumlin, although the man is a good offensive coach. It's either Briles or Freezo according to the grapevine that they are considering, but who the hell knows, Canada still hasn't been let go yet.

That statement is a bit worrisome because I'm not sure Ogeron knows what he wants at QB. Evidently he's telling this kid he wants a "pro-style" QB. Yet, the two QB's LSU recruited the hardest this year (Rogers/Foster) were both dual-threat guys.
Hell, how many times has Ogeron flip-flopped on the offensive approach he wants to run? Last year at various points he stated he wanted a DT guy only to later say he wanted a pro-style QB. He then hires a OC who kind of runs a mesh of both and after 3 games hates the offense.

Doubt it’s Briles. Too much baggage with the Baylor fiasco

I wonder if bringing on Sterlin Gilbert as OC would lock him up.

orgeron is probably going after who he thinks is the best qb. lots of dual threat guys can't pass very well and only have straight line 40 speed and no running ability or vision. always get the best qb. dual or pro doesn't matter.

As much as I want a Justin Fields-type, I'd take Gunnell in a heartbeat. He is elite.
You can build around elite PP's or elite DT's and be an equally effective winning offense.
The key is being elite. They are play-makers, difference-makers and program-makers.
