We will be fine can't get any worse than that no.4 ranked 2020 class. That really showed us rankings are hit or miss can't just go of it only.

Not once did I say anything negative regarding the class. Everyone on this board is so hostile lol. I’m sure we’ll finish top 10 as always. We’re almost for sure a lock for Wardell Mack and Dominick McKinley. I like what BK has done. You keep kids here that want to be here, playing for LSU is unlike anything in the country, particularly when you grew up here.

I just thought our class should be sitting higher than 14. Also I can assure you I’m not just talking out of my arse, I’m a local high school coach. I follow recruiting pretty heavily

I think the ranking services are hit and miss on ranking players alot. I believe they rank some players high just off how many camps they attend, who gives them access to interview them, who family is,and social media farming. I have seen people in Texas say they believe Caden is better than Tatum but they have Tatum higher on services. All we can do is trust the staff evaluation on players not saying you don't.

Hmm. I may have read your post incorrectly.

The title would have suggested to me that while you’re happy with the best LB commit in the state, you don’t want to ‘jump the gun’ but the body of the post says that the title should have been, great pick up by tigers: but still rated too low. …..even though I would have assumed that coaches don’t really care about recruit rankings etc.

The fact that Kelly has 8 of top ten is crazy. Louisiana coaches should know that’s a great class; up or down year.

Years lsu goes 8-9 of 10 for la boys normally is such a solid class. This is the way keep every single la guy in state and pull a few out of states and I’m thinking two years from now it’s10-10 La boys and 5-10 out of state 5 and 4stars

We are right where we typically are for this time of year. I think last year around this time we were like 12th or around there. Bama was like 30th? Idk but they were up there. They didn’t finish that way. There are so many moving parts in recruiting so I don’t worry until we get closer to November. Even then you still see elite players moving around and emerging, all the way up until early signing period and even in the late period you see classes can change with a recruit or two. Then you have the transfers on top of all that who can change a teams roster quickly. Our coaches know exactly what we need and they know exactly what they will need to get that done. The rest is just drama. Just like no one was expecting the Many LB to commit like he did. Anything can happen at anytime. This is LSU so we have tons of tools to use and this staff knows when to use those tools and which ones we’ll need to use on who.

I'm curious to see how much flipping happens during the season.

There used to be a bigger stigma around it, but that's long gone. Kids are a lot more likely to flip after seeing how the season is going for some schools.

If 8&4 puts up another season like last year, I'd have to imagine some kids decommitt. Then again, they might only be going there for the bag to begin with.

Kids go to aggieland to get paid early and then transfer to a school that’s actually good at football.

You seem to value a recruiting service and their ratings over the guys Kelly has on his big board.

During media days, Kelly gave an interview where he discussed the under rated quality of Louisiana recruits and also mentioned Ondre Davis and the tackle from North Carolina as guys the recruiting services had criminally under rated.

I say that to say that while the recruiting services have some value, to call them experts would be disingenuous.

If they were so good at identifying top talent, they would be working as some teams director of scouting, and not writing click bait articles to drum up site traffic.

Brian Kelly is playing the long game in recruiting. He isn't paying attention to rankings.

He is doing two things:

1. Getting underrated Louisiana kids (HS and portal) that we might've missed out on in the past due to spending too much time/energy chasing the shiny out of state kids. This will pay dividends for years and years as they all have cousins/brothers/friends that will be big recruits too. It also creates allegiances in these high school programs and smaller towns to the Tigers.

2. He is getting "program kids" that will be positive locker rooms guys and stay until their 4th/5th years and develop in the program. These types create player retention across the board.

He is in year 2. These things above will really bear fruit in years 3, moreso in 4, etc. and beyond. We might not have top 3 classes by the "recruiting services" every year, but the quality from top to bottom will be outstanding when we look back at his classes in hindsight.

ETA:

This isn't to say we shouldn't go after some awesome players across the country, but it isn't going to be all we do. Orgeron liked doing that wayyyy too much.

All valid points and I think spot on. Of course he wants the big fish, but he also wants the right kids that buy in to the program. Find the kids with the talent that can be developed that will stick around. Find the Lloyd Cushenberry types that can be developed. Find the portal players that are hungry.

Build a culture of team first, developing talent and winning and the top players will come.
