Kicking coach guru...I know we have one or two here...?
Can’t remember their handles. I searched, to no avail. Communicated a bit but my son was too young to bother people about it. Now he’s about to finish his 8th grade football season and he’s making goals for the summer.

Thinking I just take him to a Kohl’s showcase and get him on the 2025 board. Make some contacts, see where that goes.

Just looking for some advice or if anyone knows the TD names of guys who can give it, I’d really appreciate it.

Two more games to get through before I can breathe easy, but he’s already talking about camps/showcase. Toughest game of the season on Thursday and he’s QB, kick/punt returner, kicker, punter...so lots of nervous plays before we’re in the clear fior this year.

Thank you. All of my searches...I knew I would know the name if I saw it.

Kickoff video from last week.

He’s growing a bit too fast to build much strength, but he’s got pop and accuracy. Making 55s with the 8th grade ball and 50s regularly with the LSU game ball.

He ran a kickoff back for a TD last week and threw a 2 point conversion...then got his first touchback ever. Literally didn’t say a word about dusting their whole team, just the touchback signal from the ref.

Touchback

No telling what happens next year, QB on JV or kicker/punter on varsity.

Good leg and extension for an 8th grader. Going to Kohl's is good exposure. Flexibility is key. I used to do yogalates 3 days a week to help.
If he wants to kick in college, I would recommend going from 2" block to 1" by junior year and then kick off the ground (if coach let's him) for senior year.
There's little things you can do at home to get muscle memory like kicking a marked pad against a column, taping a target on the ground to get a consistent plant foot, one step kicks, etc.

re: Kicking coach guru...I know we have one or two here...?
He’s never kicked off a 2” block, ever. He’s been kicking off a 1” since he was 9. With an LSU game ball I’m sure he could kick it off nice grass now. He’s not very upright, he’s much more of a set play in soccer style kicker than I see those kickoff guys are. I really don’t know shite about technique or terminology. Dad just drives him to the field and shags balls.

He’s not flexible at all. In slow motion, you see high thigh come up to 90 degrees, but thats it, kind of makes him hop.

He definitely wants to kick in college.

Just want to say your kid has a gift to be kicking that far in 8th grade. I didn’t start hitting the end zones on kickoffs ‘til 11th grade. It took me some time to transition from the tee to the ground after high school. I’d definitely recommend a plan to begin the process. Practicing good lift on soccer balls helped me. Flexibility is good, but the straighter he can keep his kicking leg while maintaining good rear extension and follow through the more he’ll be able to drive the football. Weight training is very important. Nothing out of the ordinary, just the typical high school football team regiment with bench, power cleans, squats, deadlifts, leg extensions.

Check out hammer kicking academy. My son is a long snapper. We have been to Rubio/sailor for years. A couple of years ago we were contacted by Adam ( can't remember last name) about his camps. Hands down the best and cheapest we have been to.

Eta: look up Hammer kicking academy top 40 he has in Orlando every summer. It's pretty impressive with the coaches and their live feeds.

re: Kicking coach guru...I know we have one or two here...?
Thanks for the kind words. Football coaches are a quirky bunch.

Last night my son, before the game, sends a video another player took of him kicking a 50 yard FG...so I’m all pumped about the game.

Game starts, coach calls an onside kick...son kicks it and we recover. Short drive, my boy throws a 35 yd touchdown pass. No XP, goes for two, make it. I’m expecting him to blast a kickoff, their returner is standing on the 30. Coach calls another onside kick. Other team ties the game up within a minute or so.

Put a drive together, boy throws some good passes, get down to the 30..I’m thinking nice FG try...nope, go for it 4th and 8...we didn’t score again after the first, lost 30-8. You have the best kicker on the district and you NEVER let him kick. Even if it’s just to build his confidence at QB, throw the kid a bone.

Tell your son, to enjoy himself PLEASE!! I kicked in college and I was the starter for 4 years.

The one thing I regret is that I put so much pressure on myself that I forgot to have fun. If he develops and really gets good, they will find him.

I may hold off on going to any showcases this early, only because those places are loaded. I get that you want to compete against the best, but sometimes that could backfire.

BEST OF LUCK!

Barrister mirrored your concerns.

Let him have a summer of weight training and a Fall of HS football, then do a winter showcase as a 2025 recruit. That’s the plan.

Here’s his warm up kick from yesterday...it’s cheesy, but it sounds like they’re having fun.

I noticed that warmup was a 50 yarder
He really gets good leverage and strikes the ball nicely. Will be rooting for you guys.
