That article really gives perspective on both sides of why all of us should remember that these rankings are just a tool, not the tool in how we should determine who to like in our classes. Watch the highlights, read reviews from as many as possible pick up word of mouth info through message boards/insiders(both ours and others) and devise your own opinion.
They admit that if a kid isn't "on the radar" then they essentially don't care if they evaluate them or not. Cases like Jefferson are rare and they will always use them as an example of a hedge.
What's baffling to me is that Destrehan isn't just some school in South LA. There is always a prospect or 2 coming through there and all coaches and recruiting sites know it well. Even had the Young kid there and ND found him.
The important thing in the article is that Jefferson and LSU had a plan in place and he was an LSU lock. If he qualified he was gonna be here. If he didn't he'd be at juco. I'm sure other staffs recognized his talent. They just knew it was futile to recruit him.

asked the recruiters why they missed on Jefferson so bad. One "reason" they gave was "academic issues". Also, they mentioned that they assumed he would go to LSU. Psst, recruiting guys, you know right that NEITHER of those should matter in rating a guy. If he doesn't consider Alabama or whatever, he shouldn't be dropped. Unless his grades affect his talent, that shouldn't matter either. If he qualifies, he qualifies. Both of those EXCUSES were nonsense...just making up stuff to cover their asses on poor talent evaluation.
You're missing the point. They tipped their hand in the answer quoted above. The recruiting sites are doing very little talent evaluation. Mainly, they are watching the REAL talent evaluators - Saban, Orgeron, etc. - and Jefferson was getting very little attention from them because 1) He had academic issues and 2) Everyone knew he was all LSU.

that explanation makes way more sense than his 2* rating

Also, some players just develop more late in their careers and there is nothing wrong with that

because they don’t want their reputation to take a hit for a kid who never qualifies.
So to be a 5 star, your grades have to be good?

Yea exactly. They're going overboard with this 2 star crap. He is a Jefferson, no one was going to spend time propping him up knowing he was never leaving the state.
