It was never an announcement ceremony

That's my issue with all of this. Clearly the agenda never intended time for players to "announce" where they were going. It was just to give them their moment in the sun and say thanks and sign their LOI's.

Surely LSU would've known this. The entire Hammond, SC school staff knew. That's why it's hard to buy the "he and coach O were texting right before and we still feel good about him." story.

I think it was a hard choice for him but in the end he wanted to stay close to home. I can not fault anyone for doing that.

I agree. He committed in December and the story all along was that he was waiting to sign with his teammates. He never decomitted and my understanding was this was always a "signing ceremony." Sure it was odd that he visited LSU on his own dime, but I'm not sure why anyone thought this would go any other way than it did.
