I think this is the biggest problem with the rating. Considering a team like bama played 16 true freshman last year and went 12-0 in the regular season shows that a 2 star penalty is kind of harsh for freshman. I do find it interesting that teams like Tennessee and Auburn seem to have good talent but are not being picked to do very much this year while Ole Miss is being picked very high with the 8th most talented team in the SEC. I agree with the guy that said QB should have some seperate value becasue it seems to be the most important thing on team success. That is the reason UT and Auburn are down and Ole Miss is up.
They played true freshmen.. did not start them.

I was about to call you a huge nerd, but I'm actually impressed with your research.
Have you ever given consideration to working for a Vegas oddsmaker?

Thanks for the compliments!
No, I haven't considered working for an oddsmaker, but about 25 years ago, I had mathematical system for betting that over a year went 11-2 against the spread. I gave that up, because it was too much work to keep up, and I'm really not much of a gambler.
In an earlier post I said that LSU had a 5.65% chance of winning the NC. This would be the equivalent of 17.7 to 1. The vegas odds came out after at 20-1 and have since fallen to 18 to 1. (Not too shabby)
I have thought about making a system to produce team rankings, but I don't have the time to do the programming (actually it is more that the data entry that would suck).

I am pretty much an alpha uber nerd. I have a PhD in experimental high energy particle physics. ...But as an LSU grad, I don't let being a nerd prevent me from chasing women and drinking heavily.

Doc just curious.. what kinda factors/variables did you use in your betting system?
Posted on 8/7/09 at 5:41 pm to DocBugbear
Doc, there is something that I would like for you to calculate but this is the wrong board. It concerns human population growth. Might be easier than the recruiting numbers.

I am a pretty busy atm getting ready for the classes I will be teaching this semester. I am also willing to bet that what you want to know has already been calculated and is on the net somewhere.
