Just got back from the Tupelo vs South Panola game. Tupelo had a chance to end South Panolas 82 game winning streak tonight but failed to convert on a two point conversion with just over 1 minute remaining in the game to lose 14-13.
Tupelo struggled early on offense, trying to establish the run against a great run defense. The were very conservative in the first half using runs and bubble screens. They consistantly were in a bad down and distance situation on 3rd down. On there few shots down the field in the first half Garrett threw the ball well but his receivers were dropping a lot of well thrown balls. Tupelos lone scoring threat in the first half ended with a bad snap from center from the shotgun on 4th and goal from the 5 yard line. Tupelo trailed 7-0 at the half.
The second half Tupelo looked like a different team. They used a rolling pocket to buy Garrett some extra time to throw. Garrett easily moved the ball down the field with a short passing game. His throws were crisp and right on the money. He converted 4 of 4 fourth downs in the second half, all on passes. He stood in the pocket and took hits and still put the ball on the money. I don't have his stats for the game yet but they won't tell the tale of his leadership down the stretch against a team that just demolished the #1 6A team in Florida. I've been saying that I would reserve judgement on Garrett until after this game and I have to say that he passed with flying colors. Great pick-up for Les Miles in my opinion.
I'll post the stats tomorrow.

i really think garrett is the dark horse of the class. he plays against great competition and doesn't turn the ball over. He has the best deep ball i think i've ever seen. If ever can get on the field his junior or senior years he looks like he can be another flynn or mauck but better.

Garrett is a stud. I dont see how he isnt a four star player. Hes got great measurables, and throws one of the best deep balls I have seen from any qb on film this year. IMO the analysts are overanalyzing him, more so than a lot of other four star or better qbs out there.

Here are Garrett's stats from the game last night:

18-29 with 166 yards passing, 2TDs and 1int.

Here is the kicker for me:
4th quarter: 10-13 for 103 yards passing, 2TDs, 3-3 on fourth down conversions (all passing)

Thats a pretty stout fourth quarter/game against the team with an 83 game winning streak.

I like the fact that he played so well when they were pretty much a one dimensional team b/c running against SP is a tough task.

Way to go Chris!!!! LSU is a good choice for you and for the Tigers.

All LSU fans are (or should be) very grateful that you chose LSU.

Looking forward to January when you arrive on campus.

He also played through a concussion. That helmet to helmet hit put him in the hospital last night.

I didnt think I would see anyone come close to beating South Panola in some time. They have always been good (unbeaten at that) since I have been around MS high school football.

Great team that Tupelo has. Bumphis and Garrett are studs.

I totally agree. I had no idea he had a concussion or was put in the hospital last night. That impresses me even more.

SirRo, I would like to get your opinion on Garrett. Some people on here believe he is going to be another Matt Mauck or Matt Flynn for LSU. I am of the opinion that he could be better than that (I'm not talking about NCs; just purely talking talent level). How do you see Garrett projecting for LSU?

Slightly above average for D1 qbs. Certainly not a Jamarcus Russell or RP. However, I think that he has ample tools for success at the next level. He would have been a great fit for the old Steve Spurrier / Florida system. Similar to Danny Weurffel only a bigger version. Accurate on the run and plays his best in pressure situations. Outstanding on 5-15 yard quick passes and throws a good 25-30 yard fade. He can also stretch the field when necessary.

Thanks snapper, much appreciated. Good analysis. Sounds like a great game and Garrett looks like a solid part of this class. Shame they couldn't complete the upset.
