CBK + BD have absolutely transformed a weak position group into a strength in such a short time. Bookends on the line should be covered with a combo of Calloway, Weston, Heard for awhile

They’ve got to do something about the early signing period. Coaches have too much going on right now now that the portal is so insane. And next year with the expanded playoffs, that’s 8 more teams preparing. Hell, LSU isn’t in the playoffs, but have
—to secure your current high school commits with in homes like we see here
—be in NYC for Awards weekend
—be in New Orleans for the high school state championships
—evaluate and re-recruit/process current players
—evaluate coaches and make fires and hires
—try to keep up with and flip late decommits from schools who had HCing changes
—keep recruiting guys who aren’t signing early
—put together a schedule and start preparing for bowl practice
And a bunch of stuff I can’t even think of. All during December with family and other Holliday commitments.
Most coaches make plenty of money, and I don’t feel sorry for them. But I think high school kids are gonna eventually start getting hosed. If they don’t sign early and some guys at their positions unexpectedly enter the portal, they may find themselves without a spot at the school they’ve been committed to for years. Or they may have to sign to a school not knowing who their position coach or coordinator is going to be. Or even worse, get lied to, signing thinking they’re gonna be with these guys they’ve built relationships with for years only to have their firings announced the next day.
I don’t know what the answer is, but they implemented the ESP before the portal exploded like it has and before the 12-team playoff was announced. And there are a ton of unintended consequences that not just make it harder for coaches, but are gonna inevitably screw over high school kids who slip through the cracks due to the insanity of all these things happening so simultaneously.

It's an issue that has good and bad consequences for all the kids and coaches alike. The bigger schools always benefit and that's the point. Instead of doing diligence and taking a chance on a 3* late bloomer they use the portal for immediate help. Then in 2 years when the late blooming 3* develops at Mcneese or equivalent, the big boys will just swoop in and take them from the lower class schools. Basically just cutting out the development phase. I'd say it's going just like the powers that be intended for it to.
