Title says it.

Top loader, dials and knobs - no electronic boards. About 10 years old.

My best guess is the water inlet valve, either failing or with a clogged filter.

Anyone experience anything similar and solve the issue?

The lid lock on my speed queen does if the lid didn't close all the way for it to catch.

My old washer did this and it was the lid lock. I replaced it 3 or 4 times. When it would act up it would mess the whole machine up. I finally had enough of it and through it out and got a speedqueen.

I removed the locking lid part from my direct drive whirlpool another and never had to deal with this issue again.

You sure about that - my 10 year old + Whirlpool, washer and dryer, had electronic circuit boards behind those dials and knobs - very few truly mechanical control functions even on 10 year old systems.

That said, I have SQ washer (and dryer) now, and as stated by others my washer will click if the top lid is not fully seated.
