Where to get the best Camelias?

There was a Camelia show in town (N.O.) but I missed it. I see some Camelias that look awesome, I have one that never did well (Home Depot).
Any suggestions?

Larry Bates in Forest Hill
Mizell’s in Folsom.
Camellias from Lowe’s/HD *should* be fine, but you will get better quality and variety from actual nurseries. Just remember to plant them properly.
I have over 60. AMA.

They can be finicky, and are particular about their growing conditions. High, shifting shade; not direct, hot sun. Moist, but not wet, no standing water. Prefer acid soils.

Retail plant nurseries are going to carry more popular cultivars (varieties) of camellias than big box stores, and if you required many, then some wholesale plant nurseries as mentioned that specialize in camellias, and perhaps will sell to the public at near wholesale prices (very few do) is worth looking into. But why don’t you check with the Camellia Club of New Orleans LINK and see what they recommend.
Also looks like the Baton Rouge Camelia Society show and sale is coming up in a couple weeks. I’ve never been but I understand it’s pretty impressive and tons of knowledgeable camellia growers will be there and they are always happy to answer questions and impart their knowledge to others.

Baton Rouge grafts and tends to the plants they sell which is really cool. Good idea.

Thanks for sharing info on the 2 camellia nurseries, I hunt near Forest Hills and frequently buy plants but never been to Larry Bates operation. I know they demonstrate grafting of camellias at BR show - until a few years ago I had no idea camellias were grafted. Wish I had a few more shady spots in the yard for them but darn this thread is now going to force me to find a few more spots for some.

You gotta make shade baw!
A visit to Larry Bates will make you go broke. He’ll bring you around on the golf cart and show you all kinds of cool varieties. Good people!
My wife and I were working on our Larry Bates shopping list this morning, in fact. I’m heading up next week for a few plants and some under stock for grafting.

I love camellias. I grew up with them. My grandfather was huge in the camellia society, served as president for a while. He developed a few varieties.

I hear you on dropping some coin

Curious - what is the most common under stock that is used for grafting camellias?

It depends on you ask...as does the method of grafting

Larry uses Kanjiro (I think) so that’s what I use because it’s what he sells. I also emulate his grafting method because that’s his livelihood.
Randolph Maphis is another great resource. I buy my scions from him.
Here’s a presentation he gave to the ACS:
