Pine straw is renewable (no trees are cut down to produce it). It biodegrades into soil improvement, and it is cheap.
Just say NO to cypress mulch. It represents a cypress tree that was logged. There is no protection for cypress swamps: they can be clearcut if a landowner chooses. If we worry about coastal erosion and habitat degradation in Louisiana, we should stop buying cypress mulch.

I like and use pine straw mulch and just about every horticultural extension agent I’ve spoken with or whose articles I’ve read, including articles written by professional horticulturalists in garden magazines, lean or recommend pine straw as their preferred mulch.
But any type of mulch is better than no mulch at all. In regards to free mulch, I’ll also like and use live oak tree leaves raked and bagged by neighbors in landscape beds - live oak leaves b/c they are small and don’t need to the chopped up, and also stay in place and not blow away after you place them in the landscape beds.
