Water Heater Blanket (Insulation)

Thinking about installing a water heater blankets on the water heaters in our attic. I was wondering, should I take them off when summer comes next year? I can see that they would be beneficial when it is cold in winter but what about in the summer when it is hot in the attic.

Water heaters are pretty well insulated, so I’m not sure how effective blankets actually are. I had one on my last water heater but it leaked and the blanket got wet. If you install one, be sure to cut around the relief valve so you won’t hinder its operation.
I think the majority of heat loss occurs through the piping that connects to the top of the water heater. As a result, I took some piping insulation and insulated that.

We had 2 water heaters in our last 2 houses. The builder insulated all of the external pipes and I added the blankets after we moved in. I figured it wouldn't hurt at the very least and might help some. I left them on all year.
I agree with Spankum - I had cut outs for the relief valve. I also trimmed the blanket where the thermostats were in case I need to access them but put the insulation back over the covers. Kind of like a plug - hope this makes sense.

Insulation around the pipes going out is worth a lot more than wrapping a blanket around it. Dielectric heat trap nipples too.
