I've had more than one person mention TFP when they call me in regards to a pool crack. Some of the people on that forum live in places like AZ. Things are different down here. Be careful. Not all of the pool advice you will read online will apply here in LA, especially in low-lying places like Houma with a lot of blackjack mud.

Get your water tested locally and ONLY take advice from a local pool store.

When I first had my pool installed, I did exactly this. I spent a lot of money and my water was never perfectly clear. I found TFP and my water is crystal clear and it doesn't cost much to maintain at all. TFP is great for people that like to DIY. Pool maintenance companies and pool stores are great for people that don't have the time or ability or desire to maintain their own pool. That isn't me. I do test and maintain my pool a few times a week. It would cost a fortune to have someone comes 3 times a week to tend to my pool.

I've see the "experts" at TFP recommend draining pools down to lower CYA.

This is for rare exceptions. If you are following the TFP methods correctly, you'll never need to drain your pool to lower CYA b/c you'd never let it get that high. I only add CYA in small doses via pods after enough rain has lowered my CYA. Even the TFP link posted in this thread warns of the damage that can occur and offers instructions on how to properly 'exchange' water to lower your CYA.
