I have common Bermuda and a slope/incline from house pad coming off about 10-15 feet from house. I have low spots about 3-4 inches deep and about 2-3 feet wide. Was thinking of using batture dirt to fill the big areas where low spots are on the slope. I’m concerned about the washouts from rain with masonry sand. I know I will be introduce weeds using dirt but I tend on using pre emergent to help with that. Am I going about this wrong by using dirt or should I just go with masonry sand for everything. The dirt I’m using is a sand/soil mix.

I've always heard 50/50 topsoil/mason sand mix from here, regardless of depth.

The advantages of masonry sand are that you usually know what you are getting, and it should be free of weed seeds. The disadvantages are that any filled areas will dry out faster than the rest of your lawn. Your grass will show the moisture difference.

Top soil, whatever that might actually be, will stay moist better, but will sprout weeds.

What I've tried with moderate success is a 50:50 mix, but let it stay bare a few weeks before seeding or laying sod. In that bare time a lot of weeds will sprout. Hoe them down or poison.

What about the washouts from heavy rain? Would dirt work better than masonry sand? I know this will be a long process to get it just right and plan on doing a sand leveling probably next year, but was concerned about the low spots being to deep for sand to level everything out.

Go get some free compost from your local town composting facility if you have one.
